Mrs. Elizabeth Starrett Skelton passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Mr. Harry Michael Hill, age 60, of Dewy Rose, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009 in Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Bennie Reid

Mr. Bennie Reid, age 91, of 56 Homestead Road, Hartwell, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009 in the Elbert Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 11am from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Fugate, Dr. Wendell Bannister, and Mr. Fred Greenway will officiate and entombment will be in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Anderson. The body is in The Strickland Funeral Home ~ Hartwell Chapel where the family will receive friends from 10-11am Wednesday morning just prior to the service. The family is at the home of his daughter, Eleanor Feltman, 718 Laurel Drive, Hartwell.

Born on April 23, 1918 in Hart County, he was the son of the late James “Jim” Reid and Roxie Eleanor Smith Reid. He was a retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Co. after 26 years. Mr. Reid was a member of the Flat Shoals Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran having served in the European theater. Bennie is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl Reid; grandson, Brandon Reid; and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Cantrell Reid; sons, Don Reid of Hartwell, Rev. Mr. George Marshall Slay, age 63, of Elberton, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Rev. Thomas F. Whitfield, Sr., age 89, of 1817 Old Middleton Road, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009.

Mr. Lee Raymond Johnson, age 92, of Calhoun Falls passed away September 24, 2009 in Agape Hospice.

Born August 13, 1920 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Tillman Baker and Beatrice Wright “Monkey” Baker. She was a member of the Nancy Hart Chapter of OES, former Hart County Mother of the Year, member of the Reed Creek Baptist Church and Lydia Sunday School Class. Mrs. Thrasher is preceded in death by husband, Andrew J. Thrasher; a son, Joe E. Thrasher; a grandson, Mark Chasteen; and two brothers, Bennie Baker and Thomas Baker.

Mrs. Joy Leigh Smith Cochran, age 58, of 1721 Martin Villa Road, Elberton, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2009 in her home.

Born on August 30, 1951 in Elbert County, Joy Leigh was the daughter of Lewis H. Smith, of Elberton, and the late Faye Kidd Smith. She was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church and a Clerk at American Laundry and Dry Cleaning. Mrs. Cochran is preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Faye Kidd Smith; and her husband, Mr. Winfred "Wimp" Cochran.

Survivors include two sons, Joey Chatham of Columbia, SC and Jayson Chatham of Goldsboro, NC; grandchildren, Cameron Chatham and Conley Chatham; father, Mr. Lewis H. Jim Hackney

Mr. Jim Lloyd Hackney, Sr., age 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

A native of Pittsboro, NC, he was the son of Evan and Callie Hackney. Mr. Hackney was a 1941 graduate of Pittsboro High School and had three brothers and three sisters. He moved to Durham, NC in 1942 where he worked as a manager of a grocery store. While the manager, he met Marian Waters and they were married on September 26, 1943. In November of 1942, he joined the US Army where he served in France and was wounded twice. He received the Purple Heart plus several other medals. After the war, he worked with Durham Life Insurance Company and retired after 32 years of service. His wife passed away in 1998 after an extended illness. Following his wife's death, he moved to Calhoun Falls where he attended Northside Baptist Church. He also attended the Gospel Center for over 50 years in Durham, NC.

Survivors include his daughters, Rachel Ann Johnson, Teresa Louise Kang, and Diana Lee Barfield; son, Jim Lloyd Hackeny, Jr.; brother, Evander Hackeny; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Mr. Ozie C. Moss, age 89, a "young-at-heart" loving father and husband, passed away Friday, September 18, 2009 in Hospice Care of the Piedmont

Mr. Walter "Tim" Fowler, age 56, of Calhoun Falls, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 3pm from the Chapel of Calhoun Falls Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Latimer Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm just prior to the service in the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence of Grace Fowler, 610 Darlington Street in Calhoun Falls.

Mr. Fowler was born in Anderson, SC to Walter Martin Fowler and Grace Hardy Fowler. He operated LeAnn's Produce in Calhoun Falls, and he was a former employee of Coca-Cola for 17 years. He also worked at Emerald Lanes Bowling Center and delivered newspapers locally. Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his father and by a sister, LeNay Aderhold.

Mrs. Mary Ruth Holland Madden passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

Mr. Walter V. Collins, Jr., CW4 US Army Retired, age 78, of 269 Golf Course Road, Hartwell, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Collins was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War as well as served tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Thailand and the US during peacetime. Walt was a member of the Hartwell American Legion Post # 109, long time member of the Hartwell Golf Club and a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church. As a baby, his family moved to Flagstaff, where he attended DeMiguel Elementary School before moving to Bowman, Georgia at the age of 7. He returned to Flagstaff last year after his father died. He was a smart kid and loved to read, surf the Internet and play video games. He also enjoyed disc golf, watching movies, Japanese martial arts and animals.

Mr. Forrest Larue Vereen, age 22, of Paoli, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in Grady Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries he receive in a motorcycle accident.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 5-8pm at Camp Kiwanis, 2613 Old Wildcat Bridge Road, Danielsville. He was a 32nd Mason and Shriner; he was in Oasia Shrine Patrol Unit and was a Jester of Oasia Temple of Charlotte, NC. Bud was a former member of Carolina Golf and County Club, member of American Legion Post #262; a member of Forty and Eight; Very active in the Civitan Club, a Real Estate Broker, and was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Tate and his wife moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1976. He was very active in his church, King of Glory Lutheran Church. Bud and his wife moved to Hartwell, GA in 1992. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Hartwell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bailey is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jim Shaw Tate; brother, Neal Tate; and sisters, Jamie Ruth Couch, Mary Nell Thornton, and Elizabeth Lucille Tate.

Mr. Raymond Jasper Tate, age 67, 2016 John Tate Drive, Bowman, passed away on September 4, 2009 in Athens Regional Medical Center.

Rev. Jonathan Ayers

Rev. Jonathan Paul Ayers, age 28, of Lavonia, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in Stephens County Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 2pm from the Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Daniel Parker will officiate and burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville, GA. The body is in The Strickland Funeral Home ~ Lavonia Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5-8 Thursday night. Rev. Born February 11, 1981 in Franklin County, he was the son of John Ayers and Abigail Nelson. He was a graduate of Franklin County High School. Rev. Ayers attended Luther Rice University. Jonathan was active in FFA, where he served as a State Officer. He was an ordained minister with the Southern Baptist Association and was the pastor of Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Abby Hulsey Ayers; parents, John Ayers and Abigail Nelson; and sister, Rebecca Ayers Floyd.

Mr. David Michael Pace, age 32, of Nahunta, GA, formerly of Hartwell, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009 in Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick.

Corey Sturgis

Corey Austin Sturgis, age 30, of Greensboro, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8pm from A.E. Carter Funeral Home in Madison, during which time special memories of Corey will be shared.

Corey was born on May 31, 1979, in Anderson, S.C., to Charles and Deborah Griggs Sturgis. The family eventually moved to Watkinsville where Corey was a 1997 graduate of Oconee County High School. Corey joined the United States Navy and served six years. During this time, he was active in the Persian Gulf. He was currently a full-time student at East Central Technical College. Corey had a love for movies and enjoyed writing screen plays as a hobby. He also enjoyed computers and video games. Corey will be remembered as a very intelligent and talented young man.

Survivors include one daughter, Zoey Sturgis of Lemoore, Calif.; as well as his parents, Charles and Deborah Sturgis of Greensboro; and a brother, Kyle Sturgis (Sandy) of Watkinsville. Also surviving are a niece, Sable Sturgis; and a nephew, Brock Sturgis. Corey also leaves behind aunts and uncles, Richard Griggs (Barbara) of Elberton, Edwin Sturgis (Bonny) and David Sturgis (Sandy), all of Panama City, Fla.
