Hubert Eaves


Mr. Hubert Eaves, age 85, of 651 E. Johnson Street, Hartwell, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Cobb Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 2pm from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Rev. Tommy Cleveland and Rev. Bruce Eaves will officiate and burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Born on April 11, 1924 in Hart County, he was the son of the late George R. Eaves and Ella Chastain Eaves. He retired from Hartwell Fire Department in 1993 with 52 years of service. Mr. Eaves was a member of Oak Bower Baptist Church, Hartwell Bass Club and a WWII U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theater. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, Dalford, Larry, Balaus, Frank and Robert Eaves; sisters, Lilly Mae Whitfield, Annie Lizzie Bailey, Ruth Williams, Ella Kate Ethridge and Emmie Harlow.

Dorothy Irene Kopp Schmitz Haase, age 94, of 68 College Ave, Elberton, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 in Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late Dewey Sorrow and Gladys Baxter Sorrow Parson. He was a renown sculptor and carved many magnificent memorials installed all over the United States. Mr. Sorrow was owner of G & G Granite Co. in Dewy Rose and Drake Billiards in Royston. George was a member of Masonic Lodge Philomathea #25 in Elberton. He was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Sorrow.

Mr. Albert M. Webb, age 95, of 552 Heritage Road, Hartwell, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 in Hart County Hospital.

Born October 18, 1913 in Trenton, SC, he was the son of the late Iva A. Webb and Mattie Holand Webb. He retired after 31 years from the Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Webb was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartwell and the Doc Adams Sunday School Class. Albert was a former member and Deacon of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Trenton, SC. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge (Shepard Lodge #320), Active in Boy Scouting and served as Scout Master, played tennis until age 85 and was a former member of Hartwell Lions Club. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marcesta Hook Webb of Hartwell; sister, Cornelia Jones Webb, Columbia, SC; and brother, Roy A. Webb, Lakeland, FL.

Mrs. Frances Key Sandefur, age 66, of 109 Arthur Drive, Piedmont SC, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009 in her home.

Harvey Vollrath


Mr. Dewey Harvard “Harvey” Vollrath, Jr., age 61, of Hartwell, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, South Carolina, after a courageous battle with cancer.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 11am from the Hartwell First United Methodist Church. Rev. Allen Stewart, Rev. Ken Buffington and Rev. John Silver will officiate and burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park with Masonic Rites. Harvey was born May 16, 1948, in Darlington, South Carolina, at the home of his aunt, Lila Gardner. To say Harvey was a sports enthusiast would be an understatement. Fueled by the love for his sons, Harvey devoted countless days as a coach and mentor to boys throughout Hart County. Numerous parents came to know Harvey as their child’s Little League Baseball and Football Coach or church league basketball coach, roles he loved with his heart and soul throughout the years. His dedication to Hart County Football eventually led Harvey to serve two terms as President of the Lake Hartwell Touchdown Club. He also served as the Voice of the Hart County High School Football program during Friday night home games, which he coined “Friday Night Under the Lights.” Harvey loved to inspire the fans and players before the games and always sparked the crowd by stating, “Get on your feet! Are you ready for some Hart County Football?!” Harvey recently retired from a rewarding career at the University of Georgia after 30 years of service at his Alma Mater. He loved his Georgia Dawgs, but was excited to begin his dream job as a manager at the Hartwell Golf Club. Harvey loved the game of golf and spending time with his many friends at this club. Harvey was a member and past master of the Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge #690, Hartwell United Methodist Church and served in the United States Navy in communications from 1971 ~ 1975. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey Harvard Vollrath Sr. and Virginia Gardner Vollrath.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Connie; daughters and son-in-law, Kim and Wesley Powell of Hartwell and Valerie Gifford of Weston, Florida; sons, Jim and John, both of Hartwell; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Jim Keogh of Clemson, South Carolina; three grandsons, Sidney, Peyton, and Lockaby; one granddaughter, Olivia; and niece, Kate Keogh. Each of them believes their husband, brother, Daddy and “Paw-Paw” hung the moon.

Harold was a former farmer, former coach & treasurer with the Hart County Little League and a WWII US Army veteran, where he served in the European theater as an Anti-Aircraft Gunner. Mr. William 'Stacy' Moore, age 36, of Fayetteville, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 in Tifton.

He was the son of Linda Edwards Moore and a veteran officer for Morrow Police Department.

Mr. Charles "Bo" Johnson, age 77, of Abbeville passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2009.

Jerry A. Whitlow


Mr. Jerry Whitlow, age 71, of Savannah, formerly of Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2009.

A well-known Savannah real estate developer, Mr. Whitlow was born on April 21, 1938 in Canon, Georgia. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, Jerry successfully completed his Proffessional Electrical Engineering certification and practices engineering for 27 years. He founded Whitlow Construction-a design and development firm and constructed electrical substation and transmission towers throughout the southeast. He was hired to build and design The Woodbury Earth Station, the first satellite communication stations of its kind. In 1987, Jerry so9ld his share of Whitlow Electric to his brother and turned to real estate development. He was a prominent developer on Hilton Head Island for twenty years.

In 1997, Jerry and his wife, Diane, moved to Savannah where he became active in developing the West Side of Savannah's historic section. Enamored of Savannah's historic section, he had a vision for developing its West Side, an area ignored by other developers. Jerry designed and developed Garden on Jones, Montgomer House, Tattnall Side Gardens, Taylor Row Townhouses, and Jones Square, all on the West Side of Savannah's historic district. He also organized a group to develop Boundary Village on Louisville Road, assembled the parcels of land for development of The Double Tree Hotel and The Hilton Garden Inn on Bay Street. Mr. Whitlow later formed North Savannah Properties to develop the Telfair PLantation across the Savannah River in South Carolina. Among other achievements, Jerry was twice awarded the Pope Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Born in Tallulah Falls, Georgia, he was the son of the late Zeb Lee and Anise Franklin Burrell. He was educated at Emory at Oxford, Emory University, Medical College of Georgie, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Burrell practiced medicine in Milledgeville, Athens, and Elberton. In 2009, Zeb was named the "Father of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)" for the state of Georgia, reflecting his instrumental role in the development of EMS for the past 30 plus years.

He was born March 5, 1916 in Hart County to the late Mead and Rachael Scott Sanders. Mr. Sanders was the husband of the late Edith Estes Sanders for 68 years. Howard was retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Company and a member of Flat Shoals Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and very patriotic. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. Mr. Sanders and his wife enjoyed many happy years at their lake home on Broad River, along with their beloved dog ~ Spot. Howard loved and adored each of his children and all grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Myra Sanders and Frances Ginn and brothers, Leon and Owen Sanders.
