Bob Wheeler

Mr. Robert Alison “Bob” Wheeler, age 72, of 311 Smith Street, Hartwell, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 3009 at 2pm from St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Revs. Lee Payton and Herschel Atkinson will officiate. Born May 18, 1937 in Denver, CO, he was the son of the late Walter McClave Wheeler and Ruth Miller Wheeler. He was a Graduate of Westminster High School; Graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1962 with B.S. in Civil Engineering and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and retired as Chief Engineer for J.A. Jones Construction Company in Atlanta, GA in 1986. Mr. Wheeler was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church; Hart County Golden K, where he served as a Ramp Crew Chief; Corinthian Masonic Lodge in Nashville, TN, and was in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Sosby Wheeler of the home; son and daughter-in law, Frank and Paige Wheeler of Clayton; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and David Teel of Hartwell; grandchildren, Nathan Wheeler, Duncan Wheeler, Jordan Teel, and Alison Teel.

Mr. George W. Hood, Sr., age 88, of 219 Cedar Street, Elberton passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2099 in Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Essie Guest Boswell, age 94, of Elberton passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 3pm from the Hicks Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Terry Meeks will officiate and burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The body is in the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 Friday just prior to the service.

Born in Hart County, Mrs. Boswell was the daughter of the late William A. and Janie Lou Sigler Guest. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hartwell. Mrs. Boswell was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Crawford Otis Boswell, Sr.

Survivors include her sons, Crawford Otis Boswell, Jr., Ronald Rousey, and Wayne Boswell; daughters, Mary Haulk, Linda Quates, and Joanne Boswell; several grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

Ralph Webb, II

Mr. Ralph William Webb, II, age 57, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009.

He was the son of the late Ralph William, I and Edna Fortson Webb. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Lowe Webb. Ralph was a member of Antioch Baptist Church an a US Army Veteran. He served in Germany in the early nineteen seventies.

Mrs. Janice Naomi Dirlam League, age 84 passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2009.

Born on April 7, 1925 in Blackfoot Montana to Emma Schultz Dirlam and Leo Taylor Dirlam. She grew up on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation and went to a one room school. When she graduated from High School in 1943, the life and times of Mrs. Janice Naomi Dirlam League spanned our nation. She made friends with whomever she met and worked with, was a dear and loving wife, mother and friend, always a good and humble Christian who led by example through a heart that could see the best in any person or situation in life. Janice completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University Of Washington School Of Nursing in Seattle, Washington in 1948 through the U. S. Army Cadet Nursing Program and went on to use her talents in many ways. Starting her working career behind a soda fountain in the local drug store as a teenager, as a rivet bucker in a Boeing Aircraft Plant in Seattle before college and then as a Public Health Nurse in Clay County, Florida in 1950, she saw patients throughout Green Cove Springs and the surrounding area. Janice helped to establish the NE Florida Cystic Fibrosis Clinic in Jacksonville Florida and served the patients and families as Nursing Director for over fourteen (14) years. When her daughter, Nancy League Moureau, gained her nursing degree, Janice joined her working at University Medical Center in the Pediatric Department. She continued her work with pediatric patients with Children’s Medical Services and the State of Florida Retardation Department, always working with afflicted children and their families sharing her skill and love and retired in 1993 from Children’s Medical Services.

Janice married Daniel League in 1951 and was widowed in 1994. Together, they raised four children. She was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL for 53 years, where she also worked in the Women’s Missionary Union, member of the Kingdom Builders Sunday School Class and a former deacon. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Job’s Daughters and Intravenous Nursing Society, she also worked in the Local Schools, Woodstock Community Groups, other civic organizations, clubs and other groups throughout her life. Following her retirement in 1990, she spent most of her time either in Hartwell, GA with her daughter’s family or with her son’s in Orange Park, FL. At the age of eighty-four (84) Jan felt that she had lived a rich and full life, happy and ready to move on to a richer life with the Lord. Janice and her family express many thanks to all the family, friends and Hospice for love and support throughout her life and recent illness.

Janice is survived by her sons, David League and Richard Andrew League; daughter in law, Nancy Rene Arwood League; a daughter, Nancy League Moureau; two daughters in law, Alice Mulder League and Angie League. Janice had six grandsons: Derek Mulder (Amanda), Trevor, Toby Alan, Tristan, Christopher & Corey and one granddaughter, Jordan Moureau and she had one great grandson, Dorian Mulder. She is preceded by her son, Mark Bruce League. Janice spent her last two weeks surrounded by her loving family and friends, enjoying affection, manicures, pedicures, lovely hairdos, and visiting the community theatre in Hartwell. She loved to be going somewhere every day, and never liked to be left behind. Janice League, loved by all, she will be remembered and missed.

Mr. Charlie N. Fowler, age 83, of Elberton, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 2pm from the Hicks Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Mr. Fowler was born in Franklin County to the late Pete and Elizabeth Bowers Fowler. He worked as a meat cutter and clerk for Jolly John's Grocery. Charlie also retired from the U.S. Army National Guary in 1968. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Cerlester Adams Fowler.

Azalee Dye

Mrs. Azalee Juanita Biggs Dye, age 75, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

Azalee Juanita Biggs Dye was born to the late Hoyt Stephen Biggs and Genora Hamm Biggs in Elbert County, GA on October 25, 1933. She was the older of two children. At an early age, she joined the New Era Baptist where she served as a pianist for the Junior Choir. She was a faithful worker in the Savannah River Association. She was a dedicated member of LINKS, Inc in Champaign, IL. Azalee volunteered as “Pink Lady” at Elbert Memorial Hospital in Elberton, GA. In 1970, she was inducted into the East St. Louis, ILL Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. In 1998, she received 25th year sisterhood recognition award from Grand Chapter. She served as an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for 39 years. She was well respected and loved by everyone.Azalee graduated from Elbert County High School in 1950. She received a B.S. Degree in Music from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA in 1954. She received a Masters Degree in Education from Webster University, St Louis, MO in 1974. Azalee was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late William Elliott Dye on December 31, 1954. The joy of that union was two sons, Elliott Hoyt Dye and Robert William Dye.

Billy Shiflet


Mr. Sidney William “Billy” Shiflet, 59, of 10 Third St, Hartwell GA, died Sunday, May 17 in Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at 3:00 p.m. from the Hartwell Chapel in The Strickland Funeral Home. Rev. John Silver and Rev. Carter Tucker will officiate. Burial will be in the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Born on November 15, 1949 in Anderson Co. SC, he was the son of the late Sidney Lanier Shiflet and Ruth Adams Shiflet. He was a 1967 graduate of Hart Co. High School and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Masters in Education and a Specialist in Administration. Mr. Shiflet was an industrial arts teacher then he was the vice-principal of Hart Co. Junior High from 1979 to 1988. Then from 1988 to1994 he was the principal of Hart Co. Middle School and assistant principle and vocational director from 1994 to 2001 at Hart County High School. Billy was a member of the Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge # 690, Yarrab Temple, former member Hart County Historical Society and Hartwell Zoning Board. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church and former SS Teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Arworn “Oy” S. Shiflet; a son, Lance Tylan “Ty” Shiflet of the home; a daughter, Kerri Brook Shiflet of Hartwell; a sister, Mary Hill Howard and her husband Don of Tiger GA also survive.

Born on January 8, 1933 in Enterprise OR, she was the daughter of Kenneth Showers and Dorothy Henderson Showers. Joyce married Geary F. Bird in 1951. Mrs. Bird graduated from Joseph High School in 1952. She and her husband owned and operated businesses in Enterprise and Klamath Falls Oregon. Joyce attended Concordia University, Portland Oregon, 1966-1967, McComb Community College in 1969 and graduated from Sangamon State, Springfield IL in 1971. She earned the designation of Master Gardener from the University of Georgia in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Geary; three sons, Dennis of Milford OH, Chris of Edmond OK and Michael of Sidney NE; a daughter, Karen Carney of Rocky Mount NC and ten grandchildren.

Mr. Barry Fortner, age 62, of Elberton passed away Sunday, May 17,2009 in his home.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 4pm from Dewy Rose Baptist Church in Dewy Rose. Reverend Gary Purvis and Joe Durham will officiate. Burial will follow in Cary Memorial Gardens in Royston. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday night in Hicks Funeral Home.

Mr. Fortner was a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church and participated in the Elbert County Jail Ministry. He was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather with a big heart, especially for special needs children. He Was a dedicated truck driver for GPC (Napa) for 23 years.

He was also a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Fortner was preceded in death by his parents, Lisle and Harriet Fortner; wife, Sharon Fortner; and brothers, John Mead, Clar Mead, Larry Mead, Frank Fortner, and Clarence Fortner.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Nancy Fortner; children, Tricia Dumont, Frank Fortner, Milton Fortner, Harley Fortner, Tabitha Spancake, Kevin Simpson, James Simpson, and Ricky Simpson; brothers, Lyle Mead and Milton Fortner; and sister, Virginia Barrett. Seventeen grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephew, and other relatives also survive.

Born on August 10, 1963 in Hart Co GA, he was a 1981 graduate of Hart Co. High School. He attended Emmanuel College and graduated from Spartanburg Tech. Eric was a partner in Chapman Appraisal Service of Hartwell. Mr. Chapman was a former member of the Hartwell Lions Club and a member of the Hartwell Ski Club. Eric was a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, Spares & Pairs Sunday School Class and Disciple 1 Bible Study. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Evans Chapman; maternal grandparents, Honore and Jeanne Halgand and paternal grandparents, Wilber and Myra Kay Chapman.

Survivors include his parents, Wilber Kay Chapman and Liliane Halgand Chapman of Hartwell; a son, Tyler Chapman of the home; a daughter, Breanna Chapman of the home; several aunts and uncles and a special friend, "little sister" and co-worker, Stephanie Swaney.

Madeline Carlton

Mrs. Madeline Vickery Carlton, 79, of 1051 Airline Store Rd, Bowersville, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Athens Regional Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 4pm from the Cross Roads Baptist Church. Revs. Ben Coleman and Connie Mack Bowers will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is in The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell where the family will receive freinds from 6-8 Saturday evening. Born May 2, 1930 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Clark Vickery and Susie Foster Vickery. She was retired from Dunlop and a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church and the Encouragers Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John Holbrook; second husband Harold Carlton; and by brothers, James Alton Vickery, Alvin Vickery and John Edwin Vickery.

Survivors include her son, Tommy Carlton of Martin; daughters, Brenda Garner of Anderson, Carol Beggs of Canon, Dianne Fleming of Rockingham, N.C.; brother, Rudolph Vickery of Bowersville; sisters, Helen Evans of Royston and Shirley Knapp of Columbus, OH. Seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, John Holbrook and second husband Harold Carlton and by brothers, James Alton Vickery, Alvin Vickery and John Edwin Vickery.

Helen Garner

Mrs. Helen Louise McClain Garner, 83, of 35 New Canon St., Canon, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in the Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Ga.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 2pm from the chapel in Pruitt Funeral Home. Rev. Tim Adams and Mr. Roger Mealor will officiate and burial will be in Bowers Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home and will receive friends from 7-9 Friday and Saturday evenings.

Born in Anderson County, S.C., on October 13, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence McClain and Elen Bailey Pierce. She was a retired dietician supervisor, having worked with the Brown Memorial Convalescent Center. Mrs. Garner was a member of the Brown Memorial Convalescent Center Red Hat Society & Bingo Group, and she was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie L. Garner; daughter, Anna Simmons; grandsons, Chad Garner & James Gary Garner; great-grandchildren, Kyle Freeman & Isaih Keith; and brother, Frank Hembree.

Survivors include sons & daughters-in-law, Ray & Helen Garner of Dewy Rose, Ricky Garner of Canon, David Garner of Canon, and Dale & Tammy Garner of Canon; daughters & sons-in-law, Myrtle Mealor & Steve of Winterville,, Brenda & Charlie Scarborough of Carnesville, Beverly Bennett & Jr. of Canon; sisters, Willie Mae Shelton of Canon, and Edna Scott of Hartwell; 18 grandchildren & 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr. William P. “Will” Carter, Jr., age 68, of 208 Holly Street, Hartwell, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009 in AnMed Health Medical Center.

The memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Dr. R. Born February 18, 1941 in Hart County, he was the son of the late William P. “Mr. Willie” Carter, Sr. And Thelma McMullan Carter. Mr. Carter was a graduate of Georgia Tech, Class of 1963, where he received a degree in Industrial Management and was a graduate of the Navy Supply School in Athens. Will retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass, Anderson Plant, with 27 years of service as a Quality Control Engineer. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, Sons of American Revolution and Civil War Round Table. Mr. Carter served on the board of Directors for Hart County Department of Family and Children Services, Hartwell Housing Authority and was an avid supporter of all Civil War Organizations. Will was a U.S. Navy Veteran, served as a Lieutenant aboard the USS Guam and served in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Frances Wilburn Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia V. Carter of the home; two sons, Stewart Carter and his wife Rose of Statesboro GA and David Carter of Athens GA; a brother, Jeff M. Carter of Hartwell GA; and a step-son, Mark Orlando of Hopewell Junction, NY.

Bobby Joe Robertson

Mr. Bobby Joe Robertson, age 66, of 785 Providence Church Road, Lavonia, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Cobb Memorial Hospital.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 2pm from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Revs Ken Brewer, Johnny Stowe, and Mr. Fred Greenway will officate. Born on November 13, 2009 in Hart County, he was the son of the late James Felix and Clyde Mackey Robertson. Mr. Robertson was retired from Monroe/Tenneco with 44 years of service as an electrician. Bobby Joe served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Robertson.

Mr. John Anthony Guidry, age 22, of 2011 Cedar Grove Road, Madison GA passed away Monday, May 11, 2009.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 2pm from Price Chapel Church of God. Reverend Johnny Stowe will officiate. The body is being cremated.

Born on March 14, 1987 in Boblingen Germany, he was a construction worker. He was a son of Frank G. Guidry and Heiderose Wolschke.

He is survived by his parents, Frank G. Guidry and Heiderose Wolschke; two brothers, Kai Wolschke and Patrick "PJ" McPhail. They all reside in Hartwell. Also surviving are two grandmothers, Herta Wolschke and Ingeborg Guidry.

Born on May 16, 1925 in Charlotte NC, she lived most of her life in Decatur GA. She was the widow of the late Judge Robert K. Broome. Mrs. Broome moved to Hartwell GA in 1991. Betsey was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church and the Hartwell Garden Club. She enjoyed flower arranging and playing Bridge with her friends. Mrs. Broome will be remembered for her zest for life, her vibrant personality, her compassion for others, her faith in Christ and her love for her family. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor B. George

Richard Dubose, age 85, of 440 Rome Street, Hartwell, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 11am from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Burial will follow in Hill's Cemetery. The body is in Mack's Funeral Home.

Jonathon Coggin


Jonathon Coggin was born on January 17, 1996. He passed away on Tuesday May 5, 2009 in Egleston Childrens Hospital as a result of injuries he received in an automobile accident. He was 13.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 2pm from the Bethany Baptist Church. Reverends Jerry Durham and Anthony Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Jonathon was a 7th grade student at Hart County Middle School; member of the 2008-2009 HCMS Football Team; The Outdoor Club member; Honor Student; member of FCA; and played the trumpet in band during his 6th grade year.
