Adetha Rousey

Adetha Mae Thomason "Dee" Rousey, 71, of 1672 Dickerson Road, Elberton, wife of Henry C. "Sonny" Rousey Sr., died on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospice House.

Born on February 27, 1939, in Gilmer, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Harley Milton and Alice J. Darnell Thomason. Dee was a member of the Goss Baptist Church. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having served as the Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star #106 and #550. Mrs. Rousey was a member of the 9th District Georgia Rural and National Letter Carriers Auxiliary, AARP, Elbert Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Elberton Red Hats Club. She was a past member of the U.S. Navy Wives Club and the Pilot Club International and a member of various PTA/Athletic Associations in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, California, Japan and Germany. Dee was a Pink Lady at Elbert Memorial Hospital and was retired from the Elbert Memorial Hospital Wellness Center. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rousey is preceded in death by her sister, Julia Ann Bridges.

Survivors include her husband, Henry C. "Sonny" Rousey Sr., of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon L. and Gregg Walker, of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Henry C. "Chip" and Tracey Colquitt Rousey Jr., of Elberton; brothers, James M. and Harley L. Thomason; and grandchildren, Ashley, Cara and Wesley Rousey and Tara and Jessi Walker. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Reverend Connie Ivester officiating. At Dee's request, her body was cremated. The family will be at the home, 1672 Dickerson Road, Elberton, and will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. just prior to the service at Hicks Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to Goss Baptist Church, Stinchomb Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star # 550, Masonic Philomathea Lodge # 25, Northeast Georgia Cancer Center, Elbert Memorial Wellness Center or to St. Mary's Hospice.

Stanley Higginbotham

Stanley Leon Higginbotham, Sr., 92, of 421 Elm Street, Elberton, widower of Martha Jacks “Jackie” Higginbotham, died on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at his residence.

Born on April 6, 1917 in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Edgar Glenn “E.G’, Sr. and Lizzie Mae Rhodes Higginbotham. Mr. Higginbotham was involved in the trucking and granite industries and a member of the Eliam United Methodist Church. Stanley was a WWII Veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre and a 65 year member of the Elberton Philomathea Masonic Lodge # 25. He was also a lifelong member of the Yaarab Shriners. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Martha Jacks “Jackie” Higginbotham, who passed away on December 1, 2009; and brothers, E.G. Higginbotham, Jr., and Marshall Higginbotham.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Gwen and Carroll Childs and Libby Higginbotham Love, all of Elberton; sons and daughter-in-law, S. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., of Littleton, CO., and Keith and Mandy Higginbotham, of Athens; grandchildren, Kevin Childs, Katie Childs Brown, Janson Teasley, Cory Grimes, and Lyle Higginbotham; great-grandchildren, Allie Brown and Emma Hernandez; and brother, Joe Higginbotham. Several other nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends also survive.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 4PM in Forest Hills Memorial Park with Reverend Wes Privett officiating. The family is at the home, 421 Elm Street, and will receive friends from 2-3:45 Monday just prior to the service at Hicks Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will include, Kevin Childs, Janson Teasley, Cory Grimes, Carroll Childs, Lyle Higginbotham, and Terry Stowers.

Flowers are optional, and memorials may be made in Mr. Higginbotham’s memory to Eliam United Methodist Church.

Judy Martin

Judy Campbell Martin, 64, of 2876 River Road Elberton, wife of William "Buddy" Martin Sr. died Thursday March 25, 2010 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Abbeville, SC she was a daughter of the late Alvin Campbell and Sue Saxon Campbell. She was a member of Believers Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of the home William "Buddy" Martin Sr., son and daughter-in-law Eddie and Laura Martin Jr. of Elberton, GA, sisters Margaret Cheek of Hilton Head Island, SC, and Lynn Saxon of Martinez, GA, a brother Allen Campbell of Calhoun Falls, SC, and two grandchildren Kayla Martin and Eli Martin.

She was preceded in death by a son Eric Martin and a brother Charles Campbell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 27 at 3PM at Believers Baptist Church with Pastor Waymon Dotson and Bobby Baston officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will be at the home 2876 River Road and will receive friends from 1:30-3PM just prior to the service at Believers Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will include Rusty Adams, Mark Adams, Michael Baston, Mike Baston, Bobby Baston, and Oneal Bufford.

Honorary pallbearers will include Barry Campbell, Ricky Campbell, David Baston, and Rick Adams.

Flowers are optional and memorials may be made in her honor to Believers Baptist Church Building Fund.

Julia Yeargin

Julia Vidalia Brown Yeargin, 86, of 1037 Country Club Rd. Elberton, widow of the late George Albert Yeargin died Thursday March 25, 2010.

Born in Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Norman Brown and Mattie Sue Willis Brown. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a retired supervisor from Elberton MFG for over 20 years.

Survivors include a daughter Judy Hairston of Lithonia, GA, sons Jerry Yeargin of Elberton, GA, and Wayne Yeargin of Tignall, GA, sister Williamette Scarborough of Elberton, GA, eight grandchildren, and fifthteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters Ruby Alexander, and Naomi Yeargin, and a brother S.B. Brown.

Funeral services will be held Sunday March 28, at 3PM at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. David McConnell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will be at the home 1037 Country Club Rd. and will receive friends from 1:30-3PM just prior to the service at Berry Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will include Keith Andrews, Todd Yeargin, Jeffery Yeargin, Greggory Yeargin, Jason Hairston, and Jonathan Hairston.

Kenneth Stocum

Kenneth Curtis Stocum Jr., 55, of 116 Carey St. Elberton widower of the late Barbara Mayo Stocum died Saturday March 20, 2010 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Rochester, NY he was a son of the late Kenneth Curtis Stocum Sr. and Helen Walker Stocum. He was of the Christian Faith and attended Elberton Church of Christ, he worked in the kitchen at Roadhouse Restaurant.

Survivors include daughters Tracey Stocum of Ocala, FL, Christine Stocum of Ocala, FL, Amanda Summerall of Lakeland, FL, and Debbie Stocum of Ocala, FL, sons Jeff Mayo and Kenneth Curtis Stocum III both of Ocala, FL, sisters Kathy Dean of Elberton, GA, and Linda Studer of North Palm Beach, FL, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and time.

L. Roger Evans

Mr. Lynn Roger Evans, age 63, of 1507 Washington Highway, Elberton, widower of the late Carolyn Evans, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born on December 25, 1946 in Elbert County, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Rudell Evans. He was retired as a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his brother, L. C. Evans.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Marie Evans of Elberton; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Becky Evans of Elberton; sister, Janet Conlee of Iva, SC; brother Arthur Evans of Calhoun Falls, SC; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11AM at the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Reverend Rev. Leon Suttles will officiate and burial will follow in Fortsonia Cemetery. The family is at the home, 1507 Washington Highway, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday evening at Hicks Funeral Home.

Alvin "Acy" Christian, Sr.

Alvin Gordon Christian Sr. , 73, of 3422 Anderson Hwy. Elberton husband of Rosa Reeves Christian died Monday March 8, 2010 at Anmed Health Medical Center in Anderson, SC.

Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late James Worley Christian and Macie Dickerson Christian. He was a member of Rock Branch Baptist Church, a retired Captain from the National Guard, retired from Southeastern Power Administration, and was a brief one time owner of Elberton Health and Fitness.

Survivors include his wife of the home Rosa Reeves Christian, daughter Amanda "Mandy" Madden of Elberton, GA, sons Rodney Reeves Christian of Elberton, GA, A. Gordon "Bubba" Christian Jr. of Bowman, GA, and J. Derrick Christian of Elberton, GA, a sister Velera Christian Furcron of Rock Hill, SC, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday March 13, at 11AM at Rock Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Wright and Rev. Ed Sayer officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11AM just prior to the service at Rock Branch Baptist Church.

James "Zeke" Gunter

James Howard "ZEKE" Gunter, 87, of 212 Gordon St. Elberton, widow of the late Mazell Locke Gunter died Sunday March 7, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospice House.

Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Thomas Gunter and Ruby Fleming Gunter. He attended Frances Asbury UMC and was a life member of the VFW Post #5456 and a member of the Elbert County Moose Lodge #1099, and retired stone polisher. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Survivors include his daughter Carol Walters of Elberton, GA, sons Dennis Gunter of Hartwell, GA., Steve Gunter and Larry Gunter both of Elberton Ga. Sisters Marjorie Bettis and Janite Boles both of Elberton GA. 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2great-great grandchildren and a number of step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers Leon Gunter and Hubert Ellis Gunter and a sister Katherine Brookshire.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 10, at 3PM at the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. DAvid McConnell officiating. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will be at the home 212 Gordon St. and will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday night at Berry Funeral Home. Flowers optional and memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice, P.O.
