Walt Collins, Jr.

Mr. Walter V. Collins, Jr., CW4 US Army Retired, age 78, of 269 Golf Course Road, Hartwell, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at his home.

The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date by his family. The family request no flowers, memorials may be made to Hart County Relay for Life, 1610 Lightwood Rd, Hartwell GA 30643 or Vista Care Hospice, 150 Ben Burton Rd, Bogart GA 30622.

Born on February 23, 1931 in Brookhaven DeKalb County Georgia, he was the son of Walter V. Collins Sr. and Betty Lee Sanders Collins. He was retired from the US Army after 26 years of service. Mr. Collins was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War as well as served tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Thailand and the US during peacetime. Walt was a member of the Hartwell American Legion Post # 109, long time member of the Hartwell Golf Club and a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Walter “Skipper” Meason; three brothers, A.W. Collins Sr., Richard Collins and Bobbie Lee Collins and a sister, Betty Louise Nutt.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Charity Ann Fernald Collins of the home; two daughters, Cindy Moon and her husband Johnny of Statham and Barbara Gray and her husband Junior of Hartwell; three sons, Brad Collins and his wife Lucille of Ellijay, David Collins of Gainesville and Charles Meason and his wife Sharon of Buford; eleven grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter “Skipper” Meason; three brothers, A.W. Collins Sr., Richard Collins and Bobbie Lee Collins and a sister, Betty Louise Nutt.
