Jimmy "Smitty" Smith

Mr. Jimmy Earl "Smitty" Smith, age 58, of Royston passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in his home.

Born December 3, 1950 in Delhi, LA, he was the son of Estelle Wyatt Smith and the late C.H. Smith. He was in the Construction Industry and attended Holly Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was also a U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Goss Smith of the home; son, Brian P. Smith of Bowman, GA; mother, Estelle Wyatt Smith ; brothers, Tom Smith of Brandon, MS, Charles Smith of Tallulah, LA, and James Smith of Bridge City, TX; sisters, Gladys S. Mrs. Ellie Mae Spearman Hughes, age 89, of 895 Ankerich Road, Bowersville passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in her daughters home, Conyers.

Edwin "Red" Craft

Edwin "Red" Craft, age 78, of 258 Craft Road, Hartwell passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009 in his home.

The graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 11am from the cemetery at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Rev. Carter Tucker will officiate. Born on March 19, 1931 in Hart County, he was the son of the late Cheddie Craft and Fleddie Adams Craft. Mr. Craft was a farmer. Dot Weldon


Mrs. Dorothy S. Whitworth Weldon, age 85, of 261 Fairview Avenue, Hartwell, formerly of Bowersville, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009 in Hart Care Center.

Survivors include her son, Joe W. Weldon of Marietta, GA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her late husband, Julius A. Weldon, who was married for 62 years; brother, Bobby Joe Whitworth, and a sister Elizabeth who died in infancy. Mrs. Weldon worked for 20 years for the Department of Agriculture, ASCA (Agriculture Stabilization Conversation Service) as a Clerk. Mrs. Weldon spent her life doing for and giving to others. She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church where she was a member of WMU, Encouragers Sunday School Class, and Mollie Williams Missionary Group. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star #398 for over 50 years.

Mrs. Juanita Elizabeth Osborne passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Anderson, SC on January 14, 1924, Mrs. Auten was the daughter of the late Richard V. Ayers and Mamie Lou King Ayers. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Gladys had been a member of the Adult Choir, the Women's Ministry, and sung alto with the Ladies Trio. As a young girl, she sung on the radio and at churches with the Ayers Trio. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Roy F. Auten; three granddaughters, Christy Bowman, April Auten, and Kayla Sharee Auten; two sisters, Louise Ayers Woosley and Helen Ayers Bleckley; and three brothers, Rev. Hester V. Ayers, Bill Ayers and Johnny O'Dell Ayers.

Survivors include four loving daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Billy Boggs, of Calhoun Falls, Jennie and Rev. Born July 8, 1954, he was the son of Rebecca Dye Knighton and the late Clarence H. Knighton. He was Group Vice President of Pinnacle Bank and managed offices in Royston, Lavonia, Franklin Springs, and Commerce. Mr. Knighton coached basketball, football, and golf in Franklin, Oconee, and Hart County Schools for many years. Bruce was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon as well as in many other capacities. He was a past president of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, as well as serving on the Downtown Development board of directors. Mr. Knighton loved people and had a special connection to children. He loved his family and he loved the outdoors.

Mrs. Kathryn Sanders Thomason, 83, of 354 Highland Ridge Drive, Hartwell, passed away on Monday, July 13 in Hart Care Center.

Bill Davidson will officiate and entombment will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Rev. Terry Meeks will be officiating the graveside service. Born on December 17, 1925 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Emory Sanders and Texie Partain Sanders. Mrs. Thomason was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Thomason was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Winfred W. Thomason; two brothers, Emmett Sanders and Everett Sanders; and a sister, Annis Conway.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Carol Thomason of Cloudland GA and Rocky & Debbie Thomason of Lavonia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Faire & Dean Teasley of Hartwell, Winfreda & David Smith of Hartwell, and Lessie & James Paul of Crawford; a sister, Faye Ziegler of California; a brother, Alton Sanders of Hartwell; twelve grandchildren, Deana Roach, Ginger Bauknight, Kim Teasley, Travis Teasley, Teresa Paul, Jamie Paul, Bridget Paul Burroughs, Katie Smith, Russell & Ryan Thomason, Tannis & Zachary Smith; six great-grandchildren, Austin & Katie Freeman, Jessie Roach, Clay, Luke & Rebekah Bauknight also survive.

H. Gary Forston


Mr. H. Gary Fortson, age 54, of Dewy Rose, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009 following an extended illness.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 2pm from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Purvis will officiate and burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8pm in the funeral home.

Mr. Fortson is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Annie Laura Fortson; and father-in-law, J.W. Davis.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Patricia Fortson; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Buddy Stephens; grandchildren, Tyler and Heather Stephens; sisters, Connie Carter, Lisa Chandler, Elaine Short and Lynn Herman; brothers, Ronnie and Alex Fortson; mother-in-law, Patsy Davis; and brother-in-law, Wayne Davis. Mary Opal Daniel Adams

Mrs. Mary Opal “Nana” Daniel Adams, age 92, of College Park, GA, formerly of Elberton, passed away peacefully in the home of her sister, Juanita Marsh, after an extended illness.

The family will receive visitors in Berry Funeral Home, Elberton Georgia on Monday, July 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 and the services will be held in Berry Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, July 14 at 11:00. Opal will be interred in Elmhurst Cemetery with her husband and their three children. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Southwest Christian Care, 7225 Lester Road, Union City, Georgia 30291 or the United Methodist Children’s Home, 500 South Columbia Drive, Decatur, Georgia 30030.

Opal was the daughter of E. R. “Bud” and Jessie Stratton Daniel and the wife of Hubert Teasley Adams, all who predecease her. Opal was born and raised in Elberton, Georgia. She and Hubert, her husband of fifty five years, moved to Atlanta in the early forties. She worked for thirty seven years at Rich’s Department Store and later they moved back to Elberton upon retirement. Opal and Hubert were the parents of three children, James Daniel, Mary Eleanor, and Iris Elaine, all of whom died in infancy.

Because of her strong faith in God, first developed in the Harmony Baptist Church she attended with her parents, she and Hubert were able to survive the death of their three babies. That strong faith continued throughout her life. She was a faithful member of the Lakewood Methodist Church in Atlanta and later First Methodist Church of Elberton. While she had no children grow to adulthood, she cherished her brothers and sisters and their children and helped each of them throughout her life. She is predeceased by her brothers, Everett and Cecil, and survived by her sisters, Juanita and Peggy and her brothers, Charles and Marshall “Buddy”, as well as many nephews and nieces. During the last years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her sister, Juanita and her dear care givers, Linda, Monica, and Minnie.

Mrs. D’Etta Jean Baker Risner, age 49, of 811 Chandlers Ferry Rd, Hartwell, passed on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Hart County Hospital.


The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 11am from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Reed Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The body is in the Strickland Funeral Home ~ Hartwell Chapel where the family will receive friends Thursday morning from 9-11am prior to the service. The family is at the home.

Born on February 17, 1960 in Corcoran, CA., she was the daughter of Broadus "BC" Baker and Barbara J. Williams Baker. She worked for Quality Care for Children as a Contractor for the State of Georgia as Area Day Care Coordinator.

Survivors include her husband, Steve W. Risner of the home; son, Josh Risner of Hartwell; daughter and son-in-law, April and Jason Williams Hartwell; parents, Broadus "BC" Baker and Barbara J. Williams Baker, of Hartwell; sister, Debbie Baker of Hartwell; grandchildren, Alexis, Blade and Jasmine Williams; special niece, Briana Baker.
