Dixie Ayers

Mrs. Dixie Maxwell Ayers, age 77 died January 31, 2009 in her home.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 11am from the chapel in Hicks Funeral Home. Reverend Joe Hulsey and Reverend Gary Purvis will officiate. Burial will follow in Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at The Hicks Funeral Home.

A lifelong resident of Bowman, Mrs. Ayers was born in Elbert County to the late Boyce L. and Lizzie Mae Moore Maxwell. She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church and the North Georgia Daylily Club. Dixie retired from Rogan, Inc. as office manager.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe Ayers; sister, Gwendolyn M. Denny of Warner Robins; niece, Libby Zink of McCamey, TX; many other nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Fred Hampon

Mr. Fred Hampton passed away Friday, January 30, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 3pm from Welcome Wesleyan Church. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm prior to the service in the church. Burial will follow in Bethlehem UMC Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert C. Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Sherlyn B. Hampton; mother, Jessie N. Hampton; children, John C. Hampton, Amanda Giannotti, and Ricky Fuller; sisters, Brenda Scarborough and Elizabeth Clarke; brother, Adam G. Hampton; and two grandchildren, Justin and Destiny Fuller.

Walt Brown

Mr. Walter "Walt" Brown, age 82 of Bowman died Thursday, January 29, 2009.

The private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Survivors include his son Randy Brown of Bowman, daughter Wanda Evans of Bowman, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Tony Alford of Carlton, sister Mildred Roling of Lavonia and former wife of 19 years Janice Elgin of Canon. 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive.

Jake Conwell

James "Jake" Thomas Conwell, age 82, of 1935 Athens Highway, Elberton Ga. passed away on January 27, in the Elbert County Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held Friday January 30, at 2:00pm from the Doves Creek Baptist Church. Internment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at the home and will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday night from the viewing parlor in Berry Funeral Home.

Flowers are optional and memorials may be made in his honor to Doves Creek Baptist Church.

David Hudson, Sr.

Mr. David Cobb Hudson, Sr. age 89 of Fortsonia, died January 25, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 3pm from the Fortsonia Baptist Church. Revs. Russ Moore and Phillip Hart will officiate. Burial will be in Fortsonia Community Cemetery. The remains will be placed in the church at 2pm to lie instate until the hour of service Tuesday Afternoon. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Monday evening in the funeral home.

Born in Elbert county, Mr. Hudson was the last surviving child of the late Albert Rayle Hudson, Sr. and Callie Mae Jones Hudson. He was a lifelong member of Fortsonia Baptist Church and served in the US Army in the pacific theater during WWII. His wife of 60 years, Marion Ward Hudson; brothers and sisters, Albert Hudson, Jr., Clarke Hudson, Frances Balchin, Mack Hudson, Carroll Hudson, and Bob Hudson.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David C., Jr. and Jenny Hudson of Fortsonia; daughter and son-in-law, Susan H. and Andy Maxwell of N. Augusta, SC; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Frances Bell Hudson and Peggy Hudson of Fortsonia, Ruth P. Hudson of Winterville, and Jean Hudson of Calhoun Falls, Sc; many nieces and nephews.

Margaret Bond Rucker, age 99, of 126 Brookside Drive, Elberton, widow of the late Thomas Bailey Rucker, died January 23, 2009.

Born in Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Carpenter Bond. A member of the Elberton First United Methodist Church, she was a retired physical education teacher.

Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Baldwin of Marietta, GA; sons, William "Bill" Rucker of Gramling, SC and James B. Rucker of Irmo, SC; 7 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. William "Billy" Ciccio, age 44 of Elberton, died January 17, 2009.

Mrs. Sara Fortson Guest, age 83 of Elberton, died January 14, 2009. Mrs. Guest was born in Elbert County to the late Jefferson Hood Fortson and Minnie Lou Maxwell Fortson. She was raised in Elberton 1st United Methodist Church and was an active member of the choir. She was also a member of the local chapter of The Red Hats Society and she received a 10,000-hour service pen as a volunteer at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17 at 3:00 PM in Elberton 1st United Methodist Church. Rev. Wallace Wheelis and Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon 2-3 PM at the church prior to the service. H. Paige H. Funk

Mrs. Heather Paige Harrell Funk, age 34, went to be with the Lord on January 12, 2009. She was the wife of Steve Funk. Born on October 11, 1974 in Raleigh, NC, she had resided all of her life in different parts of Georgia. She had lived in the Augusta and surrounding area since 1981. Mrs. Funk was a member of the Abilene Baptist Church, having come to know the Lord earlier in life. She will be remembered by her family and loved ones as a person who loved people and was always ready to help anyone who had a need.

Left behind to cherish her memories are her husband, Steve Funk of the home in Evans, GA; children, Tyler Harris, Chelsea Harris, Peyton McCall, and Lexi McCall; her parents, Rev. William F. “Bill” and Carolyn Funk of Augusta; sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgia and A.C. McGill of Lincolnton, GA, Mandy and Reagan Williams of Grovetown; grandparents, Martha Raye Harrell of Tifton, GA, and Hazel Bragg of Tifton, GA; father and mother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Carl Funk of Hanover, MI.

Betty Lou Terrell

Ms. Betty Lou Carruth Terrell, loving mother, age 68 of Toccoa, died Jauary 11, 2009. Ms. Terrell was the daughter of the late Charlie Carruth and Johnnie Mae Thompson Carruth and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Wade Alewine, a granddaughter, Valarie Elizabeth Vickery, and a brother, Jack Carruth.

She is survived by her son, Tanny (wife, Tammy) Alewine, a daughter, Kimberly Lou (husband, Thomas) Vickery, and son, Timothy Wade “Butch” Alwine, all of Hartwell; grandchildren, Keston Clarence Alewine, Wendy LouAnn Dove, Tanya Elizabeth Alewine, Heather Alewine, Christopher Alewine, and Jeffrey Freeman; Nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Jimmy Carruth, Larry Carruth, Ed Carruth, all of Greenwood, SC, and Dean Carruth of Harwell; sisters, Jane Wicker of Hartwell, Ann Spouse, and Carol Ricks, both of Greenwood, SC; many nieces and nephews.

J.H. Pete Bailey

Joel Hubert "Pete" Bailey, 86, of 22260 Dr. George Ward Road, Elberton, husband of Sue Balchin Bailey, died Saturday, January 10, 2009.
Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Bessie Teresa McDonald Bailey and James Alvin Bailey. He was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church, retired truck driver for Greenway Oil Company; a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving in the 112th Combat Engineer Battalion in the Normandy D-Day invasion and the Rhineland Ardennes, The Battle of the Bulge and Central Europe.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Bailey; daughters, Teresa (Jack) Dye, Lisa (Mitch) Ruff, both of Elberton; sister, Crystal Edwards of Elberton; grandchildren, Clint, Clay, and Cliff Dye and Jessica and Garrett Ruff.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Monday (January 12) in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. Wesley Private and Rev. Phillip Hart officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

The family is at the home, 2260 Dr. George Ward Road, and will receive Friends at Berry Funeral Home, Sunday evening from 6 - 8 pm.

Sara W. Whidby

Ms. Sara Thomas Willis Whidby, age 83 of Elberton, died January 7, 2009. Ms. Whidby was born in Hart County to the late Haney E. Willis and Minnie Lee Carlton Willis, and she was a life-long member of Concord UMC. She was preceded in death by her son James Edward Whidby and her brother Donald J. Willis.

She is survived by her son Wayne T. (wife, Ann) Whidby of Calhoun Falls, SC; her daughter Sandra W. (husband, Lamar) Lindsey of Elberton; grandchildren, Michelle Adams, Melissa (husband Marcus) Tomas, Zeke (wife, Christy) Adams, and Jared (wife, Amanda) Whidby; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Emmalee, and Gracie Whidby, Blain, Caiden, and Braxton Tomas, Brittany and Michael Owens; her brother, John E. Willis of Elberton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday January 10 at 11:00 AM in Concord United Methodist Church with her body to lie in state at 10:00. Rev. Al Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
