Debra Rice

Debra Marie Ross Rice, 49, of 1905 Lincolnton Hwy. Elberton, wife of Richard Rice II died Saturday April 24, 2010.

Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of Annie Louise Bonds Ross and the late Jackie Ross. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls, SC, and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of the home Richard Rice II, daughters Sedena Marie Summers, and Katlyn Elizabeth Summers, a son Kenneth Eugene Summers Jr., her mother Annie Louise Bonds Ross, sisters Yvette McHan, and Derilyn Ross, and a brother Dale Ross.

Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday April 27 at 2PM at Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Phillip Hart officiating. The family will be at 1881 Lincolnton Hwy. and will receive friends from 12:30 to 2PM just prior to the service at Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Sherald Colvard

Sherald Johnson Colvard, 83, of 3428 Defoor Road, Toccoa, Georgia, formerly of Elberton, husband of Betty Jo Colvard, died on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at his residence.

Born on October 31, 1926 in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Gipson Calvin and Mertie Mildred Herring Colvard. He was a past chairman of the Democratic Board of Elberton and the retired Vice President of the Elberton First National Bank. Mr. Colvard was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church and a former employee of Hicks Funeral Home. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Colvard Ayers and Rozelle Colvard Johnson; and a niece, Sheraldean Ayers Crawford.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Betty Jo Colvard; daughter and son-in-law, Loretta C. and Keith Cheek of Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-law, Sherald Joe and Merrie Colvard of Elberton, and John and Connie Colvard of Toccoa; grandchildren, Tara and Mitchell Presley, Eric Wolf, Alexa Ivester, Camran Fleming, Autumn Cheek, Scott Cheek, Ryan Fleming, Justin Colvard, Jamie Colvard, Elizabeth Marstellar, Morgan Ertzberger, and Taylor Ertzberger; 15 great-grandchildren; niece, Sylvia Johnson Yarborough; and nephew, Calvin Johnson. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 3PM from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service in Elmhurst Cemetery. Reverends David Keister and Kenny Martin will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday night at Hicks Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Joe and Merrie Colvard, 1577 Brewers Bridge Road in Elberton. Flowers will be accepted.

Pallbearers will include Camran Fleming, Ryan Fleming, Brandon Ivester, Justin Colvard, Eddie Stowers, and Eddie Teasley.

Nellie Dickerson Hendricks

Nellie (Dickerson) Hendricks, 93, currently of Andrews, NC, a native of Hancock County, GA, and long-time resident of Elbert County, passed away on April 10, 2010 in Murphy, NC after a short illness.

Mrs. Hendricks, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Calloway of Hancock County, was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman Dickerson; her second husband, Carl Hendricks; her son, Rev. Ray Dickerson; and her granddaughter, Sherri Dickerson Lewis. She was a member of the Goss Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hendricks is survived by two sisters, Dena Osborne of Newnan, GA and Alma Holsenbeck of Milledgeville, GA; two children, son, Neil Dickerson of Phoenix, AZ and daughter, Brenda Jamison of Andrews, NC; daughter-in-law, Amy Jo Canales Dickerson of Elberton; four grandchildren, Russell Dickerson of Irvine, CA, Aimee McCormick of Marietta, GA, Angie Dickerson-Schnatz of Glen Mills, PA, and Dr. Lance Dickerson of Pikeville, KY; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Hendricks are scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11AM from the Goss Baptist Church. The family requests that flowers please be omitted, and memorials be made in her honor to the Goss Baptist Church.

William Haley

William Hoyt Haley, 100, a resident of Magnolia Estates in Elberton, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. He was a son of the late Ira S. Haley and the late Minnie Gaines Haley of Elberton.

He was born and reared in Hart County. He later lived in Birmingham, Alabama, and West Palm Beach, Florida. Then he went to the University of Georgia and received a degree in Forestry in 1938. After graduation, he worked in Camden County, Georgia as a forester. There, he married Wilhelmina Stafford in 1940. In 1941, he moved to Hazlehurst, Georgia, where he lived for 54 years. In Hazlehurst, he was a forester, a Dodge and Plymouth dealer, a pulpwood dealer, a high school teacher, and he did some surveying and timber cruising. In 1995, he moved to Magnolia Estates.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilhelmina Stafford Haley, and a son, William Jackson "Jack" Haley.

Survivors include one son, Bob Haley of Orlando, Florida; three sisters, Reba Craft and Margaret Ward of Elberton, and Mary Rathbun of Ohio; one brother, Marion Holman Haley of Hartwell; a sister-in-law, Gwen Heath of Hazlehurst.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 2PM at the Elberton First Methodist Church with Reverend Wayne Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 just prior to the service at the Elberton First United Methodist Church in Elberton. Burial will be in the Palms Memorial Gardens, Hazelhurst, Ga. on Thursday April 22, 2010 under the direction of the Wainright & Parlor Funeral Home.

Jeff Barker

Jeffery Allen Barker, 39, of Atlanta, formerly of Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 in Athens.

Born on July 26, 1970 in Elbert County, he was a son of Anne Dixon Barker of Elberton and the late James M. Barker, Jr. He was employed by Agnes Muriel’s Inc. as a Special Events Coordinator.

Survivors include his mother, Anne Dixon Barker; brother and sister-in-law, James M. “Jimmy”, III and Tammi Barker, all of Elberton; nephews, Miles Barker, Ryan Herman, and Gary Hahn, Jr.; nieces, Addison Barker, Amy Schmitt, and Leanna Hahn; and step-sisters, Tammy Hahn and Martha Ellen Herman, both of Knoxville, TN.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 3PM from the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Denni Moss and Reverend Dwight Morgan officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Fortsonia Community Cemetery. A reception will be held on Saturday from 2-3PM just prior to the service during visitation at the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. The family will be at the home of Jimmy and Tammi Barker, 1276 Grady Cleveland Road, Elberton.

Pallbearers will include Ryan Herman, Steve Searcy, Pete Smith, Don Maxwell, Steve Jenkins, and John Jenkins.

Jeanette Finley

Jeanette Lavonia Smith Finley, 81, resident of Heardmont Nursing Home Elberton, GA., died Wednesday, April 7, 2010. She was the widow of the late Loyd Marlor Finley.

Born in Anderson, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Arlington and Alice Smith. Mrs Finley was a member of Elberton Christian Church. She was a homemaker and the mother of 4 children. While living in Anderson she and her husband had an antique business in the Centerville Community. They were active in their church, Evergreen Hills Baptist Church, and made many long time friends with similar interests in antique glassware and furniture. They moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed their retirement years and eventually moved to Elberton to be closer to their families.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Owens of Elberton, a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Janet Finley, of Shelby, N.C., 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Owens, and 2 sons, Dennis and Denneth.

Surviving siblings and their spouses (all of Anderson) are brothers Melvin and Jane Smith, Wilton and Sybil Smith, and sisters Mildred and Oscar Russell and Thelma King. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Smith, and sisters Thrace Haley and Montez Bryant.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 9, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be 3 PM followed by services at 4 PM. Officiating will be long-time family friend, Jimmy Brown of Elberton, and Chaplain Dennis Duck of Hospice Advantage. Burial will be in Anderson, S.C., at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Saturday.

Sara Edwards

Sara Crystal Bailey Edwards, 96, of 3154 Calhoun Falls Highway, Elberton, widow of the late John Wilson Edwards Jr., died Tuesday April 6, 2010 at Heardmont Nursing Home.

Born in Hart County, she was a daughter of the late James Alvin Bailey and Bessie McDonald BAiley. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, a house wife, and formerly of Magnolia Estates.

Survivors include a son John W. Edwards III., of Elberton GA., 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday April 9, 2010, at 1 PM at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. Lacey Bowcock officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family is at the home 3154 Calhoun Falls Highway, and will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Pallbearers: James Lee Bailey, Chad Bailey, Lewis Bailey, Clint Dye, Clay Dye, Garret Ruff.

Bob Tiller

Robert Lewis “Bob” Tiller, 74, of Spring Valley Healthcare Center, Elberton, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born on March 11, 1936 in Oglethorpe County, he was the son of the late James Dorsey and Martha Grace Tiller. Mr. Tiller was a U.S. Army Veteran and the owner/operator of Tiller Trucking Company. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lucille Tiller Lee.

Survivors include his daughters, Debra Ramsey, Diana Leigh Turner, and Robbie Ashley Tiller; son, Robert Chase Tiller; and several other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 4PM in Forest Hills Memorial Park with Rev. Jack McVeigh officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 3-4PM at Hicks Funeral Home.

Reuben Kelley

Reuben Ben Kelley, 66, of Elberton, died on Monday, March 29, 2010 at the home of Scott and Melissa Smith.

Born on September 24, 1943 in Madison County, he was the son of the late Bunyan Monroe and Flora Essie Kelley. He was retired as a machinist with Wilson Electric and served in the U.S. Navy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kelley is preceded in death by his brother, Dewey Rose Kelley.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Hope Smith, and Kimberly Denise Kelley; sons, Reuben Lee Kelley, and Vincent Brian Kelley; stepdaughter, Melissa Smith; sister, Brenda Faye Damron; 5 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 3PM at the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. The family is at the home of Scott and Melissa Smith, 286 Highland Park, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday evening at Hicks Funeral Home.
