George Ward

George William Ward, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at his residence.

He was the husband of Anne Greenway Ward for 64 years and the father of Donna Ward (Jim) Stallings of White Plains, Georgia and Lynne Ward (Walt) Seeger of Waynesboro, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 2PM at the Elberton First Baptist Church with Reverend Gary Purvis and Reverend Ken Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. Visitation will from 6-8PM Friday, January 1, 2009 at Hicks Funeral Home.

He was the son of the late Ike Swift Ward and Hettie Teasley Ward of the Rock Branch Community. He is preceded in death by an infant son, two sisters, and three brothers.

Ward retired as Chief of Police after a 41 year career with the Elberton Police Department. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Washington, DC; Special Police Management and Traffic Institute, Northwestern University; Law Enforcement and Peace Officers Training Program, University of Georgia.
Mr. Ward was appointed to the Georgia Crime Information Council as a representative of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police of Governors Carter, Busby, and Miller, serving from 1973 to 1993. He served on the board of directors of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy and the Northeast Georgia Criminal Justice Advisory Council.

Ward was the last remaining charter member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs Police. He served as President and in many other capacities and was awarded the “Outstanding Chief” award at the association’s annual conference in 1976. Upon his retirement, Chief Ward obtained the distinction of being the longest tenured Police Chief in the United States. He was proud of his work in improving training for small town police departments and increasing training opportunities for Chiefs throughout the state.

He was recently honored for his “commitment and dedication to the City of Elberton” by the naming of the newly renovated Police Department of him.
Mr. Ward was a longtime member and deacon of the Elberton First Baptist Church and was a member and former President of the Elberton Kiwanis Club. He was presented Kiwanis’ Highest, the George F. Hixon Fellowship Award on the 80th anniversary of the club.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by grandchildren, Melissa Donna Argo, George Martin Neal, Claudia Anne Seeger, and Walter Rhodes (Tina) Seeger, Jr., and Joshua James (April) Stallings; great grandchildren, William Baxter Argo, Bryce Anne Argo, Dustin Andrew Neal, Mason James Stallings, and Rebecca Claire Seeger; and sister-in-law, Agnes Ward. Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Pallbearers will include Jack Fricks, Charles Hill, John Hubbard, Rod McCarty, Marion McMullan, Billy Webb, Dr. Jack Wheeler, and Dan White.

Honorary pallbearers will include the Elberton First Baptist Church Victory Sunday School Class members, and past and present officers and staff of the Elberton Police Department.

Bob Farmer, Jr.

Mr. Robert Waite Farmer, Jr., age 70, of 534 Rhodes Drive, Elberton, husband of Marion Anne Herndon Farmer, passed away on Sunday December 27, 2009.

Born in Elbert County, he was a son of Robert Waite Farmer, Sr. and the late Pearl Rampey Farmer. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Chruch, and a retired plant foreman from the granite industry.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Anne Herndon Farmer of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Lynda Farmer III of Elberton, and Jim and Mary Farmer of Clarkesville; father, Robert Waite Farmer Sr., Elberton,; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jane Farmer of Elberton; and 7 grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Farmer will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11AM from Elmhurst Cemetery. Dr. Bill Quarrels will officiate. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends from 6-8PM Monday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Cullen Howell

Mr. Cullen Bryant Howell, age 89, of 3032 Anderson Highway, Elberton, husband of Valeria Gulley Howell, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2009 at the Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Hart County, he was a son of the late Thomas J. Howell and Ada Brown Howell. He was a member of the Rock Branch Baptist Church and retired building inspector for the City of Elberton. Mr. Howell was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Valeria Gulley Howell, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Cindy Howell of Elberton, Larry and Judy Howell of N. Augusta, Don and Dawn Howell of Lagrange, and Tommy and Susie Howell of Belton, SC; sisters, Hertha Robinson of Greenville, Grace Veal of Elberton, and Bobbie Kirkland of Winter Park, Florida; brother, Walton Howell of Elberton; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Howell will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 2 PM from the Rock Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church to lie in state from 1-2 PM. The family is at the home, 3032 Anderson Highway, Elberton, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Monday at Berry Funeral Home. Mr. Travis Mark "Lightning" Mills, age 39, of 1297 Ridge Road, Dewy Rose, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2009.

Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Wallace E. Mills and Juanita Childs Mills. He was a member of the Eliam United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Casey Mills of Jackson County; and a sister, Robin Dutton of Dewy Rose.

Funeral services for Mr. Mills will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 3pm from the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Rev. Kenny Martin will officiate. Johnny Burton, Ricky Burton, Walter Mills, Jordan Black, and Max will serve as pallbearers and burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Rev. James Herman White

Rev. James Herman White, age 73, of Hartwell, husband of Shirley Norris White, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Piedmont Hospital.

A. "Coleman" Davis

Mr. Alfred “Coleman” Davis, age 90, of Elberton passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Violet Doty Davis.

Survivors include he sons and daughter-in-law, Al and Brenda Davis, and Paul Davis; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Steve Arnette; brother, Bill Davis; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Jaye Boyd

Marilyn ‘Jaye’ Harvard Boyd, age 60, of Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the home of her sister, Gwen Chavis in Macon.

Born on November 8, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Roma Harvard. Jaye graduated from McEvoy High School in 1968 and attended the Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College. She was a cancer survivor and an Organizer for the Elbert County Relay for Life. She was a member of the Vesta Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her spouse of 23 years, William C. “Hoppy” Boyd, and father and mother-in-law, William C. “Bill” and Nita Boyd.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Walter “Brock” and Lisa Harrell Boyd of Athens, and Jeff Boyd of Elberton; sisters and brother-in-law, Gwen Chavis of Macon, and Pam and Greg Blakeney of Williamson; brother and sister-in-law, Walter “Hoss” and Lisa Harvard, of Macon; and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Betty Jo Boyd of Elberton. Several nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 2PM in the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Bruce officiating. At Jaye’s request, her body is being cremated.The family is at the home, 1625 Athens Highway, Elberton, and will receive friends from 1-2PM just prior to the service at Hicks Funeral Home.

Harold Lawrence, Sr.

Mr. Harold Arnold Lawrence Sr., age 84, of Calhoun Falls, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home in Anderson.

Born March 26, 1925 in Greenville, he was married to Ruby Payne Lawrence for 65 years. He was the son of the late Virgil B. and Mary Evelyn Tucker Lawrence. He retire from Rocky River Yarn Plant in Calhoun Falls as a cost accountant. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church where he served on various boards. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls Lions Club and the Calhoun Falls Masonic Lodge #283. He was also a member of the Calhoun Falls American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, three sons, Harold Jr. and wife Linda of Milledgeville, GA, Don and wife Pam of Abbeville, Johnny and wife Jane of Lowndesville; two daughters, Teresa Thornton and husband Robbie of Savannah, GA and Cindy Chihasz and husband C.P. of Abbeville; a brother, Warren and wife Toni of Manteca, CA. 12 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty Jean and Violet.

Mattie Hayes

Mattie Mabe Hayes, age 84, of Elberton, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2009 at her home.

A native of Rowan, N.C., she was the widow of Golden Hayes. She was preceded in death by sons, Sammy and James Witcher.

Survivors include children, Bruce (Linda) Witcher, Peggy (Leland) Milton; daughter-in-law, Lucy Witcher; brother, Otis Mabe; grandchildren, Amanda Thigpen, Bo Witcher, Shelia Wofford, Walton Witcher, Brandy Milton, Scott Strickland; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 17, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Thift officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, December 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

John Waters

Mr. John Steve Waters, age 88, of Calhoun Falls, passed away December 11, 2009 at the Hospice Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood.

Born on July 22, 1921 in Lowndesville, he was the son of the late Alonzo Crayton Waters and Molly Hill Waters. He was a lifetime Mason and Shriner, retired Sergeant First Class from the US Army with 23 years service, worked for Calhoun Falls Police Dept., retired from Abbeville County Sheriff’s Dept., and was a member of Northside Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 53years, Mattie Cain Waters; and five sisters.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, June and William McCall of Calhoun Falls, Kay and Paul Cape of Abbeville, and Dee and James of Greenwood; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and JoAnn Waters of Iva and Luke and Peggy Lee Waters of Calhoun Falls; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Prue Waters of Clinton and Clemson Waters of Calhoun Falls.

Funeral services for Mr. Waters will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 3pm from the Chapel of Calhoun Falls Funeral Home. Rev. Brian Hatchett and Rev. Jerry Dalton will officiate. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers and interment with full military rites will follow in Latimer Cemetery. Frank Stratton

Mr. Frank Jefferson Stratton, Jr., age 81, of Elberton, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2009 at his residence.

Born on November 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Frank Jefferson Stratton, Sr. and Ethel Holmes Stratton. A member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, he married Jacquelyn Gaines on January 24, 1948. He retired from the Elberton Police Department after 5 years of service, and from the Elberton Fire Department after 5 years of service. Mr. Stratton was a dedicated and devoted employee of Hicks Funeral Home for 30 years. After retiring from Hicks Funeral Home, he worked for the Elbert County Detention Center for 12 years. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, William “Billy” Stratton, and Robert “Bob” Stratton.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jackie Gaines Stratton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Roger Stratton, and Jeff and Wanda Stratton; daughter-in-law, Freda Stratton; four grandchildren, Melissa Stratton, Chad Stratton and wife Emalia, Torri Stratton and husband Josh Mills, and Whitley Rae Stratton and fiancé, Justin Bellew; and four great-grandchildren, Brady Johnson, Abbey Johnson, Dawson Mills, and Hailee Stratton.

Funeral services for Mr. Stratton will be held on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 2PM from the Francis Asbury United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Lloyd and Reverend Jim Spooner officiating. Donald Allen

Mr. Donald Allen, age 57, of Elberton, passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Emory University Hospital.

Born on September 6, 1952 in Waycross, GA, he was the son of the late Elijah Allen and Beatrice Strickland Allen. He was a retired Commercial Truck Driver. In addition to this parents, Mr. Allen is preceded in death by his sons, Joseph Kevin and Christopher Michael Allen; sister, Terrie Allen; brother, Richard Allen; and grandchild, Erica N. Greenway.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Parker Allen of the home; daughters, Melissa D. Greenway of Hartwell, Michelle Stone of Hartwell, Myra Zollner of Elberton, and Melissa Stone of Hartwell; son, Jay Rowland of Hartwell; brothers, Ronnie, Charlie, Lonnie, and Tony Allen, all of Waycross; sisters, Marie Taylor of Waycross and Clara Allen of Blacksheer; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mr. Allen will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11am from the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Rev. Curtis Parker will officiate. The remains are being cremated. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6-8pm at The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell.

Lucille Brice

Mrs. Lucille S. Daniel Brice, age 104 years and 10 months, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Nancy Hart Nursing Center.

Lucille Smith was born on February 2, 1905 in Elbert County to Addie Mills and Samuel Russell Smith. She was married to M. Frank Daniel in 1923 and lived in the Rock Branch community for 50 years. Later they moved to Elberton on Elizabeth Street where she resided until she went to Nancy Hart Nursing Center in July of 2002. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elberton. Mrs. Brice is preceded in death by her son, Frank Bernard Daniel who passed away in 1996.

Survivors include her daughter, M. Frances Truitt of Elberton; daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Billy Hill of Augusta; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Daniel; grandchildren, Eddie Frank Teasley, who was raised in her home, Marie Cordell Parks, Jerita Cordell Carlton, and Danny E. Keith; great-grandchildren, Tonya Teasley Nelms, Tina Teasley Thornton, Michele Dennard, Chase Carlton, Casey Carlton, Cara Keith Gailey, Megan Keith Balchin, and Mia Keith; and great-great-grandchildren, Bardly Nelms, Blake Nelms, Bailey Thornton, Candence Carlton, Georgia Balchin, Madlyn Dennard, Macy Dennard, Marley Dennard, Aydin Gailey, and Faith Gailey.

Mrs. Clarinda McCrary Adams, age 93, of St. Louis, MO, formerly of Elberton, passed away on December 4, 2009.

Born in Elberton, Georgia on October 12, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ira Allen and Martha Vesta Maxwell Clinton. Mrs. Adams was a member of Northside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Reid McCrary Jr, Fred Ray, and Cliff Adams; brothers, Robert and John W. Thornton; sister, Emma Jo Smith; and daughter, Martha Selma McCrary Essmeyer.

Survivors include her daughter and sons-in-law, Mary Frances McCrary and Robert Rammelsburg of St Louis, MO, and Robert Essmeyer of Olatha, KS; and son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Thornton and Rebecca McCrary, of St. Louis, MO. 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Adams will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 12 noon from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Reverend David McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday morning from 10am until time of service.

Martha "Jackie" Higginbotham

Mrs. Martha J. “Jackie” Higginbotham, age 82, of Elberton, passed away on December 1, 2009 in Athens Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Higginbotham was born in Mountville, SC to the late John Lyles Jacks and Ladell Blackstock and was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her brothers, J. L. Jacks and Sam Jacks, and her sister, Gwen Cooley.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Stanley Higginbotham of Elberton; sons and daughter-in-law, Leon Higginbotham of Littleton, CO, and Keith and Mandy Higginbotham of Athens; daughters and son-in-law, Gwen and Carroll Childs, and Libby Higginbotham Love, both of Elberton; grandchildren, Kevin Childs of Guyton, Katie Childs Brown of Elberton, Jason Teasley of Elberton, Cory Grimes of Elberton, and Lyle Higginbotham of Athens; great-grandchildren, Allie Brown and Emma Hernandez, both of Elberton; and brother, Mills Jacks of Greenwood, SC.

The graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 11am from Forest Hills Memorial Park. Rev. Wes Privett will officiate.
