We greatly appreciate it when you e-mail your obituaries to us, especially death notices before the arrangements have been made. Below, we have included an obituary template. All of our obituaries will be written this way, starting on Monday, December 06, 2009. We appreciate you providing us with the date of birth, place of birth, parent's name, biography, survivors, and funeral service arrangements so we can better serve the community. MR. JIM FRANK BURDEN

Mr. Jim 'Frank' Burden, age 92, of Elberton, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born on September 16, 1917 in Elbert County, he was the son of the late Lee Llewellyn and Myrtie Chastain Burden. He was a long-standing member of the Solid Rock Family Worship Center, formerly the Elberton Church of God, where he served as head usher for a number of years. Mr. Burden was also a youth Sunday School teacher for several years. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Frances, Annie Ruth, and Estelle; and four brothers, Tom, Buford, Walton, and Julian.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Magnettie Pless Burden of Elberton; sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Erlene Burden, Charles and Cindy Burden, all of Elberton, and Gene and Linda Burden of Athens; daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Vernon "Junior" Vaughn, and Sarah Anderson, all of Elberton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. One brother, Charlie Burden, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Burden will be held on Saturday, Novemer 7, 2009 at 2pm from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Rev. Leon Suttles and Bishop Randy Coggins will officate. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers and burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of ______________, 1234 John Doe Lane, Elberton, and will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday evening at Hicks Funeral Home.

Ann Dunbrack

Mrs. Ann Erwin Dunbrack, age 63, of Bowman, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2009 in St. Mary's Hospice House.

Born on October 28, 1946 in Elbert County, Mrs. Dunbrack was the daughter of the late Travis Alton and Sarah Estelle Varnum Erwin. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and attended Dewy Rose Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Harry A. Dunbrack of Bowman; daughters and son-in-law, Cindy and Charles Churney of Dewy Rose, and Toshia Dunbrack of Myrtle Beach, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Kristy Dunbrack of Elberton; grandchildren, Casey Ann and Callie Churney of Dewy Rose, and Alex and Ava Dunbrack of Elberton; and brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Denise Erwin of Elberton.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 12noon from the Dewy Rose Baptist Church. Rev. Kenny Martin will officiate and the body will be cremated following the service. The family will receive friends from 11-12noon just prior to the service at Dewy Rose Baptist Church. R. Dick Heimerich

Mr. Richard P. “Dick” Heimerich, age 79, of 1388 Old Beacon Light Road, Hartwell, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2009 in St. Mary’s Hospice, Athens.

Born on February 21, 1930 in Manhattan, New York, he was the late Oskar Heimerich and Theodora May Heimerich. He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant, serving 21 years in the U S Air Force. Dick was also retired from Fulton County Government in 1990 as a Data Systems Manager. Mr. Heimerich was a former member of the Hart Co. Golden K and the Kelley Stompers of the Kelley Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a Mason, member of the American Legion Post 109, Hartwell Golf Club and the Hartwell First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Ann” Lovell Heimerich of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Rick Heimerich of Duluth and Chuck and Melinda Heimerich of Dacula; a daughter, Donna Heimerich of Acworth; a sister, Kathy Mangan and her husband Bob of Hartwell; and a granddaughter, Mollie Heimerich also survives.

A memorial service will be Sunday, November 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hartwell First United Methodist Church with Dr. R. Allen Stewart officiating. Full military honors will follow the memorial service. The family is at the home and will receive friends after the memorial service Sunday at their home. Mr. William R. “Bill” Haley, age 70, of 1303 Royston Highway, Hartwell, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2009 in the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

The funeral service will be on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 4pm from the Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Rev. Dan Bailey will officiate and burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Born in Hart County on February 22, 1939, he was the son of the late William H. Haley and Kathleen Mauldin Haley Brewer. He retired from Monsanto Chemical Company as a Nylon Production Technician. Mr. Haley was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Royston and a US Air Force veteran. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Anna McElrath Haley

Honorable Selma Cheely

Honorable Chief Magistrate Selma Parris Cheely, age 73, of 25 Stovall Cir, Hartwell, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009 in AnMed Health Medical Center.

A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on November 24, 2009 at 7pm from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm just prior and after the gathering. The body is being cremated. In liey of flowers, memorials may be made to the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence, PO Box 814, Hartwell, Georgia 30643.

Born on February 1st, 1936 in Dekalb County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Crawford and Birdie Black Crawford. Ms. Cheely was a graduate of the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, where she was senior class president of her class. Chief Magistrate Cheely was serving in her 14 year in office. She achieved several professional rewards, including a life time achievement award. She was highly respected among her peers in Law Enforcement and Judicial Services. She founded and served the Northeast Georgia Coalition on Domestic Violence in Hart County. She worked close with the school system, educating youth about the judicial system. She had passion for working for the people, serving citizens. Went full time, all the time.

Survivors include her sons, Ronald McClung of Lawrenceville, Mike Parris of Jackson, Doug Parris of Canton, and Steve Parris of Marietta; two brothers, Roy Crawford and Ned Crawford, both of Anderson; and six grandchildren, Amie McClung, McKenzie, Dusty, Dan, Stephen, and Leslie Parris.

Floy Wilson

Mrs. Floy Brown Wilson, age 86, of 74 Williams Street, Hartwell, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2009 in Brown Memorial Convalescent Center.

Born on March 12, 1923 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Jack Brown and Ella Rowland Brown. She was retired from Bellcraft Mfg. She was a member of Reed Creek Baptist Church and attended Freedom Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by parents; husband, Woodrow H. Wilson; and brothers, Joe, George, Wade, Ralph and Jack Brown.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Columbus Baker of Hartwell; brother, James Brown of Bowersville; sister, Ruth Teasley of Hartwell; and several nieces and nephews.

George Bellew

Mr. George L. Bellew, age 92, of 621 River Road, Carlton, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2009.

Born in Morgan County, he was a son of the late Luke Bellew and Cornelia Beal Bellew. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a retired mechanic, a Madison County Grey, and a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving in WWII. Virginia Hunter

Mrs. Mable Virginia Stevens Hunter, 75, of West Rd., died Thursday morning at her daughter’s home in Lincoln County.

Mrs. Hunter was born in the Tyrone Community and had lived there all her life. She was the widow of Everette Franklin “Rady” Hunter, and was the daughter of the late Sanders and Mable Silvey Stevens. She retired from the Wilkes County Board of Education, having worked in the nutrition department. She was an active member of the Phillips Mill Baptist Church, was a WMU member until 2006, and had taught Sunday School for 27 years. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her sister, Helen S. Lamar.

Mrs. Hunter is survived by two sons, Franklin S. Hunter. And wife Melissa, of Washington, and John Hunter, also of Washington; one daughter, Marcia H. Kirkland, and husband Perry, of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Tara (Ronald) Johnson, Mandy (Scoty) Roberson, and Kimber Kirkland, of Lincolnton, and Jody Hunter, of Washington; six great grandchildren, Cheyene Keller, Tristan Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Meagan Hunter, Brittan Johnson, and Bailyn Roberson.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 21, 2009, at 11:00 am at Phillips Mill Baptist Church with Rev. John King, Rev. Lee Hunter, and Rev. Jamie Callaway officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Marshall King, Bobby Standard, Manuel Hunter, Ray Moore, Gary Hopkins, and Shelton West. Honorary pallbearers will be Morrison Maxwell, Corrie Maxwell, Henry McAvoy, and members of the Adult Women III Sunday School Class of Phillips Mill.

Roy Gunnells

Mr. Roy Eldon Gunnells, age 83, of Elberton, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009.

The funeral services will be held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 10AM in the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Purvis will officiate and burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Bowman. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6-8PM.

Born in Elbert County on November 29, 1925, he was the son of the late Roy Frank Gunnells and Elsie Haynes Gunnells. He was a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church and the Samuel Elbert Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Gunnells entered the U.S. Army in the Cavalry on March 1, 1944 and rode in the last mounted review of the Horse Cavalry. He served in Burma during WWII, then as a Veterinary Food Inspector, retiring after 21 years of service. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Williette Gunnells Hulme.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Lee Gunnells of the home; three sons, David Gunnells of Dewy Rose, Roger Gunnells of Dewy Rose, and Steven Gunnells of Hiawatha, KS.; sister, Evelyn Lockhart of Auburn, Al.; brothers, Reginald Gunnells of Chattanooga, TN., and Jarrell Gunnells of Clearwater, FL.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Alma Toler

Mrs. Alma Ruth Toler, age 87, of Washington, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in her home.

The funeral service and burial will be held in Orlando, Florida. The local memorial service will be held on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 11am from the Chapel of the Washington First United Methodist Church. Rev. Gayle Seibert will officiate.

She was a native of Bremen, GA., the daughter of Ira Y. and Emily Vance Suggs. Mrs. Toler was a retired Banker and Realtor. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bramell Toler.

Survivors include one brother, Robert L. Suggs of Knoxville; nephew, J.R. Suggs and wife, Paula of Washington; great nephews and great great nieces; several cousins in South Carolina, Georgia and New Mexico; and longtime friend and attorney, George Langford.

E. "Sonny" Nash

Mr. Edward K. "Sonny" Nash, age 74, of 1454 Calhoun Falls Highway, Elberton, passed away on Tuesday November 17, 2009.

He was born in Elbert County on April 1, 1935 and was a son of the late Homer D. and Sudie Davenport Nash. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, and was retired from the granite industry.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sue Edwards Nash; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Leigh Nash; daughter and son-n-law, Tina and Reid Ferrell, all of Elberton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Poole of Toccoa.

The memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 3pm from the Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Revs. Lacey Bowock and Russell Repetske will officiate and internment of cremains will be held at a later date in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Blanche Armour

Mrs. Blanche Peterman Armour, age 91, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009 in Wills Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Oglethorpe County, the daughter of the late Gid N. and Beulah Coe Peterman. Mrs. Armour was a retired secretary from Callaway Farms and had been a school teacher for 10 years. She was a member of Rock UMC.

Jessie Maddox, Jr.

Mr. Jesse Cleveland Maddox, Jr., 85, of Washington, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2009 in Heritage Healthcare of Wilkes.

Mr. Maddox was a native of Lincoln County, the son of the late Jesse Cleveland and Laura Maude Wells Maddox. He was a retired commercial contractor and had served as President of Augusta Association for Retarded Children and on the Founding Board of Lyndale School in Augusta. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Washington and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Besides his parents, Mr. Maddox was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Boiter Maddox; daughter, Wanda Kay Allison Barnes; and sons, Gary Maddox and Troy C. Maddox.

Hugh Hopkins

Mr. Hugh D. Hopkins, age 90, of Alexian Healthcare Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, formerly of Elberton, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2009.


The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 10am from the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Rev. Bill Eaton will officiate and burial will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton. The body is at the Berry Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, November 17 from 6 - 8 PM. He was born on December 7, 1918 and was the last surviving sibling of 12 children born to Walter and Olivia Osbourne Hopkins. He was a member of the Elberton Christian Church, and was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Florine Neal Hopkins. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Greg Trotter of Chattanooga, Tennessee; son, Fred Hopkins of Sevierville, Tennessee; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth McCullough

Mr. Kenneth McCullough, age 81, of 2021 Marion Road, Elberton, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009 in St. Mary's Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 2pm from Rock Branch Baptist Church. Revs. Ken Wright, Ed Sayer, and Tim Adams will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at the home of Ruth McCullough 1654 Cromer Road, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Saturday night at Berry Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Jeff McCullough, Kevin McCullough, Doug Coker, Rob Dye, Frank Eaves, and Rob Starrett. Born in Elbert County, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a son of the late Charles B. McCullough and Corene Anderson McCullough. Mr. McCullough was a member of Rock Branch Baptist Church, a truck driver for Elberton Poultry, and a farmer.

David Isinghood

Mr. David George Isinghood, age 66 of Hartwell, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in Hart County Hospital.

Born on June 29, 1943 in Wellsburg, WVA, he was the son of the late Robert Elden Isinghood and Josephine Debner Isinghood. He was retired from Delta Airlines after 28 years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, and a U.S. Marine Corp Vietnam War Veteran.

Charles Blackmon

Mr. Charles E. Blackmon, age 92, of 1483 Elberton Highway, Hartwell, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009 in the AnMed Health Medican Center.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 3pm from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Rev. Carter Tucker and Dr. Steve Williams will officiate and burial will follow in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Born on January 20, 1917 in Hart County, he was the son of the late Thomas Jackson “Tom” Blackmon and Beulah Jordan Blackmon. He was a retired Underground and Right Away Foreman at Hart EMC for 35 years. Mr. Blackmon was a member of Hartwell First Baptist Church, Doc Adams Sunday School Class and the Hartwell Lions Club. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran, where he served in the European Theater, as a Corporal. Charles is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances Fleming Blackmon; daughter, Donna Blackmon; and a brother, James Blackmon.

Mr. Floyd King, age 72, of 1048 Smith McGee Highway, Hartwell passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in St. Mary’s Hospital.

It was his desire to be cremated and the memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11am from the Hartwell Chapel of The Strickland Funeral Home. Rev. Jack McVeigh, Mr. Virgil Hobbs, and Mr. Joel Seymour will officiate. Born on March 18, 1937 in Elbert County, he was the son of the late William Rufus King and Littie Bond King. He began working for the Corps of Engineers in 1959. He worked in the Construction, Real Estate, Mechanical and Electrical Departments, working his way to Power Plant Manager of Richard B. Russell and Hartwell Dam. He received the Supervisor of the Year Award. He was a member of the Georgia Army National Guard, graduated from GMI; was Battalion Commander of 314 Field Artillery in Elberton. He retired with 39 years of service from the National Guard retiring as a Brigadier General. He was of the Baptist Faith. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Phyllis Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Bradford King of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Cartledge of Hartwell, Angie King of Toccoa, and Kelly and Darren McClellan of Vidalia; brother, Tony King of Elberton; granddaughters, Kriston Eitel and husband Rick and Jessica Cartlege; grandsons, Taylor McClellan, Carson McClellan, Sam King, and Connor King; great-granddaughter, Alissa Eitel; and great-grandson, Landon Brow.

Mrs. Malinda Hembree Brown, age 62, of 1792 Hartwell Highway, Elberton, passed away on November 6, 2009 in Elberton.

The graveside service was held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 from the Cemetery of Concord United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made in her honor to Concord United Methodist Church.

Born on February 24, 1947, she was a daughter of the late Parker and Flora Hembree. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and a member of the Concord United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by an older brother, the late Tommy Hembree. Her surviving siblings include her brother, William “Bill” Hembree of Knoxville, TN and her sister, Martha Sue Kelly of Hartwell. Malinda suffered for 29 years from brain damage sustained from a neglected medical procedure. She always enjoyed seeing her brother and sister, seeing her smile and enjoyment will surely be missed. Malinda is in a better place with those who will love and treat her well

James "GreasyWilson" Gable

Mr. James Thomas "Greasy Wilson" Gable, age 65, of Hester Drive Apartment 6515, husband of Jo Ann Weathers Gable, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in his home.

The service will be private. The family is at the residence, Hester Drive Apartment 6515, Calhoun Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Born in Lowndesville, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas James Wilson and Gussie Redempsy Gable Wilson. He was a United States Army veteran and was a retired pulpwood operator. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father and devoted family man. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and many friends.

Mrs. Annie Lou Fortson Cornell, age 84, of Elberton passed away on November 7, 2009 in Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born on June 23, 1925 in Dewy Rose, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Annie Ruth Fortson. Cornell; her sister, Johnnie Brodeur; and her brother, Marion Fortson.

Jim Burden

Mr. Jim Frank Burden, age 92, of Elberton, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2009 in Elbert Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 from the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Rev. Leon Suttles and Bishop Randy Coggins will officiate and burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. Mr. Burden was born in Elbert County on September 16, 1917, son of the late Lee Llewellyn Burden and Myrtie Chastain Burden. He was a long-standing member of the Elberton Church of God, now known as The Solid Rock Worship Center, where he served as head usher for a number of years. He also served as a youth Sunday School teacher for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nancy Magnettie Pless Burden; sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Erlen Burden, Charles and Cindy Burden, all of Elberton, and Gene and Linda Burden of Athens; daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Vernon "Junior" Vaughn and Sarah Anderson, all of Elberton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charlie Burden of Calhoun Falls, SC. Mr. Edward Garrett Dunson Sr., age 71, of Dahlonega, formerly of Washington, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2009 in the Northeast Georgia medical Center in Gainesville, GA following an extended illness.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 2pm from the Fishing Creek Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Jesse Lee Dunson and Nettie Jenkins Dunson and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Dunson; a sister, Sue Morgan; and brothers, Norman Dunson and Julius Dunson.
