Troy McGarity

Mr. Troy Edward McGarity, age 42, of 74 Sanders Point, Hartwell, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009 in Athens Regional Medical Center.

The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 4pm from the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Rev. Gettis Allen officiating. Mr. McGarity was cremated. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Monday night at the home of his sister, Charlene & Jeremy Childs, 3252 Brown Rd, Martin GA and one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

Born on November 6, 1964 in Franklin Co. GA, he was the son of Vickie Carey York. He was a former carpenter, former member of the Georgia Army National Guard and of the Baptist Faith. McGarity is preceded in death by a brother, Harold David McGarity Jr. and a sister Sherri Denise Chappell.

Kevin Brown

Larry Kevin Brown, age 35, of 2255 Indian Hill Road, Elberton, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009 in Elbert Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 1pm from the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Rev. Irene Swann

Mrs. Irene Holtcamp Swann, 86, died Thursday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

The graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 3pm in Resthaven Cemetery. Rev. Donnie Berry will officiate.

Mrs. Swann was born in Douglas, WY, and was the wife of Garnett Swann. She was the daughter of the late Ted Holtcamp and Nora Penn Holtcamp. She and her husband were married on Nov, 9, 1943 in Gretna, LA. They spent about 35 years in Atlanta, and upon retiring, moved to Watkinsville in 1984, where they remained.

Mr. J.I. Seymour, age 78 of 125 Bailey’s Garage Rd, Bowersville GA, died Saturday, August 22, 2009 at his son’s home.

Born September 24, 1930 in Elbert County, Ga., he was the son of the late Jesse Green Seymour and Louise Schlock Seymour. He was retired from Hartwell Mills/Springs Industries and a member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Mr. Seymour was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.

Survivors: son, Michael “Mike” Seymour and his wife Cathy of Elberton, Ga., daughter, Connie Lynn Seymour of Hartwell, Ga., grandson reared in the home, Wes O’Tuel of Demorest, Ga., sister, Betty Winslett of Hartwell, Ga., special friend, Frieda Haynes of Elberton, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was a member of the Nancy Hart Order of Eastern Star.

Mabel West

Mrs. Lena Mabel Chafin West, 97, of Stoney Ridge Rd., died Friday, August 21, 2009, at Heritage Health Care of Wilkes.

Mrs. West was a native of Wilkes County, and was the daughter of the late George P. Chafin and Connie Mae Moss Chafin. She was retired from Royal Manufacturing Co., was a homemaker and a member of Phillips Mill Baptist Church. She was the widow of Daniel Everette West, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Ann West Rogers and a son, Shelton Edward West.

Mrs. West is survived by sons and daughters in law, Marion and Joyce West and Bobby and Peggy West, both of Washington; daughters and son in law, Shirley W. Goldman, of Lincolnton, and Mary W. and Louie Gene Hubbard, of Washington. One sister, Blanche C. Sisson, of Washington: 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Dr. Joseph Turcotte

Dr. Joseph Samuel Turcotte, M.D., age 56, of Hartwell, died unexpectedly on August 12, 2009.

Mrs. Glenda Wright Eavenson, age 89, of Elberton, passed away August 20, 2009.

Mrs. Eavenson was born in Jackson County, Ga., to the late George Samuel Wright and Eloise Bennett Wright. She was a longtime member of Concord United Methodist Church and UMW, Elberton Pilot Club and DAR. Mrs. Eavenson was also a retired school teacher and retired Hart County Extension Agent, a member of Georgia Retired Teacher's Association and a member of UGA Retirees Association. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles E. Eavenson.

Lothar Karl, age 77, and Sherry Allen Schweder, age 65, of Lexington passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2009 in Lexington as a result of dog attacks.

Born 1943, in Prescque Isle, Maine, to Robert and Dorothy Allen, Sherry enjoyed learning new languages, taking long walks and spending time with her beloved pets. She worked as a Bibliographer in the University of Georgia Library’s Collection Development Department for over 30 years. During that time, she played a significant role in building the libraries collections, particularly in the areas of foreign languages, linguistics, classics, philosophy, and religion.
Born in 1932 in Rambow-Stolp, Germany, Lothar enjoyed collecting books and communicating with others about Kansas Jayhawks basketball and politics on the Internet. He was a retired from the Hutchison Correctional Facility in Hutchison, K. S. and at one time, a professor at the University of Georgia.

Both Sherry and Lothar are survived by her mother, Dorothy B. Allen of Williamsburg, V. A.; her sister Victoria Allen Lazear of Portola Valley, CA; her brothers, Phillip Allen of Pointe Richmond, CA and Mark Allen of Palo Alto, CA; their two sons and daughters-in-law, York and Mickey Schweder of Hutchison, KS., and Mark and Windy Schweder of Aiken, SC; their grandson, Matthew Schweder of Hutchison, KS.; their granddaughter, Emily Schweder of Hutchison, KS.; their grandson, Aubrey Schweder of Aiken, SC.; their grandson Quinlan “Quinn” Schweder of Aiken, SC; and many loving extended family members and friends.

Antonio David Palmisano

Mr. Antonio David Palmisano, age 81, of Evans, passed away on August 13, 2009 in University Hospital.

He was a native of Clarke County, the son of the late, Leonard and Willie Mae Nelms Palmisano. Mr. Palmisano served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from the banking industry where he worked in the Accounting Department.

Born on April 25, 1922 in Hart County, he was the son of the late Henry K. Cleveland and Emma L. Jones Cleveland. He was a Brick Mason for over 54 years, a member of the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, a deacon and former Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Cleveland was a WW II US Army Air Corps veteran, where he served in the European Theater. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Janelle Hayes Cleveland; a grandchild, Tyler Yeagley; four brothers, Teasley Cleveland, Lavant Cleveland, Bill Cleveland, and Joe Cleveland; and three sisters, Irene Adams, Onie York and Gladys Cathey.

Mrs. Leonora Ogletree Lunsford, age 94, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2009 in University Hospital.

Helen was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Hartwell. She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Justin Thatcher, and William A. Beneigh; and a sister, Jennie Krasnitski.

Mr. Daniel Reese McAvoy, age 88, went home to be with the lord and his beloved wife, Mildred Nunn McAvoy on Thursday, August 6, 2009, in his home. Mrs. McAvoy preceded him last Friday, July 31, 2009.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 3pm from the Phillips Mill Baptist Church. Rev. John Kind and Rev. Mr. McAvoy was a native of Wilkes County, where he attended Courtground School. He was the son of the late Jacob McAvoy and Irene McCarthy McAvoy. Dan always enjoyed the school children when they would come and visit his farm on field trips. He was a wonderful father to his four children, who loved him dearly. He was a retired farmer and was a member of the Phillips Mill Baptist Church.

Ernest Rudeseal

Mr. Ernest Aron Rudeseal, age 75 of Hartwell, passed away on August 5, 2009.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 2pm from Sharon Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Rudeseal’s wishes were that his body be donated to the Medical College of Georgia for research.

Born December 9, 1933 in Toccoa, Ga., he was the son of the late Willard Newton Rudeseal and Ella Holbrook Rudeseal. He was retired from the CDC in Atlanta and was a member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church, The Golden K and was a Master Gardener. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict aboard the U.S.S. Bennington. Mr. Rudeseal lived in Gwinnett County before moving to Hartwell in 1996.

Mildred Willis

Mrs. Mildred Lucille Carlan Willis, age 91, of Elberton, took her place in heaven on August 4, 2009, surrounded by her five children and her faithful dog, “Gypsy” in her home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening, August 6, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00pm and the service will be held on Friday at 11:00am, at Concord Methodist Church in Elberton. The body will lie in state beginning at 10:00am. The Reverends Billy Pittman, Troy Ayers, and Al Davis will be officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was born June 21, 1918, in Elbert County, the beloved only child of the late Abijah and Ida Ruff Carlan. Mrs. Willis was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, James Ennis Willis. Also preceding her in death were her step-son, James Willard Willis, and her step-grandson, Robert Bruce Willis (Bobby).

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Dale Willis McCurley (Larry) of Madison, Deane Willis Heaton (Hugh) of Hartwell, Malita Willis Sanders of Bostwick, Keith D. He was employed by S & S Construction and was a member of the Good Hope Presbyterian Church of Iva. Mr. Seawright served two tours in Afghanistan, where he received a Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and an Army Achievement Medal. SPC Seawright was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Charles Waymon Wiles and paternal grandparents, Charles and Cleora Seawright.
