O.W. "Dub" Davis, Jr., 86, of 1138 Grady Cleveland Road, Elberton, husband of Judy Hewell Davis, died Thursday morning, March 31, 2011, at the Spring Valley Healthcare Center.

Mr. Davis was born in Elbert County, July 15, 1924, son of the late Obe Walker, Sr. and Maggie Marie Wells Davis. He was a member of the Doves Creek Baptist Church, retired from Ed Shive Tire, Elberton Philomathea Mason Lodge #25 where he was a Shriner, and the Elberton VFW Post 5456.

Surving, in addition to his wife of 33 years, are son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Linda Davis of Hartwell; daughter, Devon Davis of Elberton; four sisters, Becky Eavenson, Frances Davis, Jane Farmer, and Joyce Davis, all of Elberton; two brothers, Bill Davis of Baltimore, MD and Jack Davis of Comer, GA.

Mr. Davis is preceded in death by a son, Victor Davis.

Funeral services celebrating and honoring his life will be held 2PM Saturday, April 2, at the Doves Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Douglas Huff officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at the home of Devon Davis, 127 Springdale Road, Elberton, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday night, at Berry Funeral Home.

Charlotte Anne Garrett Sawyer

Mrs. Charlotte Anne (Garrett) Sawyer, age 67 of Calhoun Falls, died on Wednesday in the Self Regional Medical Center.

She was born on April 1, 1943, a daughter of the late David Young Garrett and Edna Emmaline White Garrett. Mrs. Sawyer was an educator and guidance counselor in the Abbeville County School System, having taught several years at Abbeville High and then for 20 years at Calhoun Falls Elementary School.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Renee' and Roy McCaslan and Joanna and Craig Leifeld; god son, Roy Turman; 6 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; 3 step-children and 4 step-grandsons.

Visitation with the family will be on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Solid Rock Community Church, 221 West Savannah Street in Calhoun Falls from 11AM until the service hour.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Sawyer will begin at 12noon on Friday at the Solid Rock Community Church with Rev. Jerry Dalton and Rev. Johnny Waller officiating.

Mr. Frank E. Alexander, 84, of 188 Early Drive, Hartwell, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Hart County Hospital.

Born on September 7, 1926 in Elberton, GA, he was the son of the late Henry F. “Doe” Alexander and Grace Holmes Alexander. He was a former employee at Newton Mills and retired from Hanesworth Mill in Anderson, SC where he worked as a mechanic. He was also a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and a US Army WWII veteran.

He is survived by two sons: James Alexander and his wife, Phyllis of Clarkesville, and Wayne Alexander and his wife, Jan, of Elberton; one brother: Wilton Alexander of Hartwell; three sisters: Kate Pless of Elberton, Willene White of Hartwell, Alma Jo Carruth of Hartwell; three grandchildren April Cowart, Amy Seymour, and Jeremy Tony Beatenbo; and four great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margie Cleveland Alexander; one son: Roger Alexander; and three brothers: George Alexander, Horace Alexander, and Raymond Alexander.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Stowe and Mr. Fred Greenway officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Milton Edwin Rampey

Milton Edwin Rampey, age 75, of 1440 Washington Highway, Elberton, Ga., passed away on March 30, 2011 at Athens Regional Medical Center with family at his side. He was born October 4, 1935, in Elberton, Ga., the son of the late Claude Milton “Pete” Rampey and Geneva Ethlyn Maxwell Rampey.

Mr. Rampey was a member of the Elberton First United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a friend to all. He was an avid gardener and was well known for his abundance of tomatoes and blueberries. He was a true sports fan, loving his Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia Bulldogs. His one true love was music, but his greatest joy was his family.

Mr. Rampey is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Ann Eaves Rampey; children: Danny (Denise) Rampey of Winder, Ga., Ann (Tim) Saxon of Oconee Co., Ga., David (Sherri) Rampey of Elberton, Ga.; grandchildren: Andrew Norris Edwin (Lindsey) Rampey of Winder, Ga., Rachel Anne Rampey of Winder, Ga., Kathryn Jewel Saxon of Oconee Co., Ga., Franklin Chase Rampey and Hilary Eav Rampey of Elberton, Ga.; great-grandchild, Braelyn Rampey of Winder, Ga.; brother, Nolan Rampey of Winder, Ga., as well as several other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 2, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elberton First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Hicks Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mary Gladys Slaton Rowe, 82, of Calhoun Falls, died peacefully at her home, with her two daughters by her side, on Monday, March 28, 2011.

Mrs. Rowe was born in Dunn, NC to the late Bud and Johnnie Holmes. She was the former owner and operator of Slaton's Cafe & Grocery Store in Calhoun Falls and a member of the Calhoun Falls First Baptist Church. Mrs. Rowe was commonly known by her tag on her car as a "Lady of a Noble."

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rowe was preceded in death by her husbands, J.W. Slaton and Berry B. Rowe; a son, James Olin Slaton; three brothers, Holbert, Delmus and George Holmes and a sister, Mildred Norris.

Surviving Mrs. Rowe are her two daughters, Janet Beasley and her husband, Gary, of Dunn, NC and Dian S. Norryce and her husband, Larry, of Abbeville; a son, Ronnie Hamilton and his wife, Debbie, of Dunn, NC; a sister, Pearl Hamilton, of Dunn, NC; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Calhoun Falls First Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in the church with the Rev. Herman Bradley officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Ethel Caldwell Hunt, 85, of 1050 Country Club Road, Elberton, widow of the late Jackson "Jack" Hunt, died Monday morning, March 28, 2011, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Elbert County September 11, 1925 she was a daughter of the late Henry Caldwell and Rosa Everlina Smith Caldwell. She was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hunt was the last surviving member of her immediate family and leaves to cherish her memory are daughter Denise Cook of Austell, GA; sons Kevin Hunt and Brian Hunt of Elberton, GA; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son Jackson Caldwell Hunt.

Funeral services to honor and celebrate her life will be held Friday, April 1, at 3PM in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Reverend Wes Privett officiating. Andrew Malloy Agnew, age 79, of 1073 Thirteen Forks Road, Elberton, Ga., died March 26, 2011 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 28, 1932, in Hart County, Ga., son of the late Waco and Margaret Agnew. Mr. Agnew served his country in the Korean War with the Navy.

Mr. Agnew is survived by his wife of 52 years; Carolyn Carter Agnew, son; Mitch (Dee) Agnew, three grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, sister; Marie Nelson of Monroe, sister; Anna Gilson of Duluth, brothers; Gerald Agnew and Robert Agnew of Hartwell.

Mr. Agnew was preceded in death by his parents; Waco and Margaret Agnew.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hicks Funeral
Home Chapel. Visitation will be on Monday March 28, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hicks Funeral
Home.

She was born November 26, 1987, in Athens, Ga., daughter of David Giannoni and the late Helen Annette Crowe Welborn.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by her daughter, Layla Sanders; father, David (Renee) Giannoni; half-brothers, Josh and Brandon Giannoni; grandmothers, Lucy Crowe and Betty Jane Giannoni; Uncle, Robert (Jean) Crowe; cousins, Kayla and Cord Crowe. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her mother; Annette Crowe Welborn and her grandfathers; Hershell Crowe and Joe Giannoni.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hicks Funeral Home Chapel with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Left to cherish his memories are children, Landon Thomas Sanders, Mariah Hobbs, both of Elberton, Destin Wheeler, Alexis Wheeler, both of Rising Fawn, Georgia, Jessica Goodnaugh of Anderson, South Carolina, and Layla Sanders of Elberton; mother, Karen Ridgeway Sanders; brother, Russ Sanders of Atlanta; sister, Juli S. Hall of Penscola, Florida; and grandparents, Doris Ridgeway and Tommy Whitworth, of Elberton. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends also survive.

Mr. Sanders is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Vincent Sanders; and grandparents, Jack Ridgeway and Charles Thomas, Sr. and Josephine Lunsford Sanders.

Dewey William Bailey

Mr. Dewey William Bailey, 88, of 542 Will Bailey Road, Hartwell, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Hart County Hospital.

Born on May 26, 1922 in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late William James Bailey and Sallie Leona Wilson Bailey. He retired as a ASCS field agent after over 30 years of service, was a member of the Nancy Hart Masonic Lodge #690, and served in the US Navy on the USS Black Hawk in the Pacific. He was also a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church where he attended the McDoyle Sunday School Class, was a former boys Sunday School teacher, served as the church clerk for 48 years, was a Deacon, served on various church committees, was a RA Leader, and coached church and recreational teams.

He is survived by his wife: Juanita Vickery Bailey; one son: Drew Bailey and his wife, Megan, of Hartwell; one daughter: Sally Timmerman and her husband, Michael, of Suwanee; two grandchildren: William Bailey Timmerman and Bailey Lindsey Timmerman. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Ray Bailey, Carl Bailey, Alton Bailey, James Bailey; and two sisters: Myrtice McLane Simpson, and Ruby Nell Denton.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Black officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Kidd was born in Elbert County, May 5, 1931, son of the late Dewy T. and Mae Bell Moon Kidd. He was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memories are brother and sisters-in-law, Roger and Juanita Kidd of Bowman and Jane Kidd, of Dewy Rose; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris K. and Jimmy Dixon and Martha K. and Wayne Teasley, all of Bowman; and several other relatives and friends.

Clarence H. Dickerson, 84, of 1010 Tate Circle, Elberton, husband of Ernestine Mann Dickerson, died Monday night, March 21, 2011, at the Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dickerson was born in Elberton, September 27, 1926, son of the late Onnie B. and Quillie Denney Dickerson. He was of the Baptist faith, a U.S. Army Veteran having served in WWII, and the owner/operator of Dickerson Construction Company.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ernestine Mann Dickerson of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Gail D. and Reuben Jordan of Elberton; two sisters, Dolly Cox and Dorothy Ann Parkman, both of Elberton; and three grandchildren, Stacey Dwain Jordan, Wesley Dale and his wife, Caitlin A. Jordan.

Mr. Dickerson is predeceased by siblings, Sally Lou Thornton, Eula Bell Franklin, J.T. Dickerson, Pierce Thomas Dickerson, Pearl Carithers, Jettie Mae Woodall, Nancy Kornegay, Lee Onnie Tate, and Gladys Griggs.

Born in Oglethorpe County, October 15, 1933, he was a son of the late John Frank Eades and Margie Holiday Eades. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired Security guard from Glen Raven Mills.

Left to cherish his memory include a sister and brother-in-law Dora and Donnie Carroll, sisters and brothers-in-law Norma Jean Pulliam, Dorothy and Mike Temple, and Bob and Julia Erwin.

Mr. Eades was preceded in death by two brothers Bobby Joe Eades and John Tyler Eades.

Born on April 9, 1940 in Forest City NC, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Hopper. She was a retired inspector at Clark Schwebel in Anderson SC and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her mother, Dessie Jane Elms Hopper of Forest City NC; a daughter, Pamela “Pam” Day Dutton of Hartwell; two sisters, Linda Harris of Forest City NC, Vickie Dover of Spindale NC; two brothers, Warren “Warnee” Hopper and Eddy Hopper both of Forest City NC; eight grandchildren, William “Billy”, Kendall, and Christiana “Christy” Dutton, Brandon, Kelly and Rebecca “Allie” Day, Hunter and Brittany Hillard and six great-grandchildren, Chase, Hannah, Connor, Kaylee, Alexander “Alex” Dutton and Mason Medlin also survive. Mrs. Day was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Day; a son, William “Bud” Albert Day; a sister, Faye Green and a brother, Ricky Hopper.

Mrs. Bessie Lois Stone Jordan, 85, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Franklin County to Charlie Ervin Stone and Lila Woods Stone. She was the wife of the late Clifford Jeffery Jordan. Mrs. Jordan worked as a seamstress.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by her children and their spouses: daughters Barbara Ann Lusk (James) and Linda Faye Floyd (Rabon); sons Thomas Jeffrey Jordan (Debbie) and Jimmy Ervin Jordan (Jo Ann). Clyde H. Hewell, age 91, of 128 Tusten St., Elberton, Ga., passed away on March 18, 2011 at his home with family and friends at his side. He was born November 6, 1919, in Dewy Rose, Ga., the son of the late Thomas and Hassie Mae Hewell. Mr. Hewell served in the United States Navy in WWII on a destroyer, the US Benner, in the South Pacific.

Mr. Hewell was a graduate of Elbert County Highschool and attended classes in Law School. He was a life long member of First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was a member of the Victory Sunday School class. He worked for the U. S. Post Office in Elberton and served as Postmaster before his retirement.

Mr. Hewell is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha V. Hewell, a daughter, Susan Guinn and her husband John Guinn of Myrtle Beach, S.C., many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Clyde H. Hewell, Jr., his brothers, Tom A. Hewell, Joe Hewell and one sister, Barbara Coker.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Joan and Carey Kidd of Stone Mountain, GA; and son and daughter-in-law Tom and Joy Rucker of Simpsonville, SC; sisters Nell Bradford and Dot Brown both of Elberton, GA; sister-in-laws Laura Smith and Doris Rucker both of Elberton, GA; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held Friday March 18, at 2PM at the First United Methodist Church of Elberton with Rev. Wayne Smith and Rev. Sid Gunter officiating. She is survived by a daughter, Joy W. Stratton of Elberton; three sons, James Welborn, Don Welborn and Tony Welborn all of Hartwell; eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Welborn was preceded in death by her husband, Sloan P. Welborn; two daughters, Louise W. Roe and Ann B. Welborn; a son, Robert P. Welborn; three sisters, Drucilla B. Carson, Ina B. Jordan and Lois B. Addison; four brothers, Johnny Byrum, Robert Byrum, Sherman and Clyde Byrum and a great-granddaughter, Anastasia Oliver.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Sandra Martin of the home; and two grandchildren, James Michael Duke and Sarah Destiny Duke.

The last surviving member of his immediate family, he is preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Adams, Alma Johnson, Mary Edwards, and Corine Hughes; two brothers, Bobby Lee Martin and George Martin; and great-nephew, Tony Duke.

Born August 19, 1941, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Edrew C. & Annie Lee Martin White. Mr. White retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass and Motor Vehicles Sale of GA. He served in the National Guard and was a member of Price Chapel Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ted M. White.

He is survived by his daughters & sons-in-law: Angela White & Lee Johnson & Amy White & Tiger Floyd both of Hartwell; grandchildren: Breanna White, Dillon Segars, Amanda Segars, Andrew Graham, Whitney Smith, Tyler Floyd, & Tanner Floyd; great-grandchild: Koltin Bryant; brothers: Howard White of Martin & Tommy White of Lavonia; and the mother of his children & her husband: Brenda & James Smith.

Mrs. Willie Sue Newton Evans, 82, of 134 Oak Street, Hartwell, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Rainey Hospice House, Anderson, SC.

Born on August 20, 1928 in Elberton, GA, she was the daughter of the late William Newton and Hattie Shiflet Newton. She was a retired seamstress for the Hartwell Company and a member of the Mt. Olivet Church of God.

She is survived by three sons: Tommy D. Evans of Hartwell, H. Dunbar Evans of Hartwell, and Kim Lamar Evans of Hartwell; three daughters: Sylvia Motes of Hartwell, Judy Alewine of Hartwell, Martha Turman of Elberton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Howard C. Evans; and one daughter: Susan Jane Dove.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home with Mr. Fred Greenway and Rev. Wayne Durden officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Garden of Prayer.

Mr. William Thomas “Pete” Chafin, Sr., 88, died Sunday evening at the GA War Veteran’s Home on 15th Street in Augusta .

Mr. Chafin was a native of Wilkes County. He was the widower of Mary Ruth Hinton Chafin, and the son of the late Miles Chafin and Willie Pearl Gresham Chafin. He was a retired logger, and he and his wife owned and operated Chafin’s Store for a number of years. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving from 1942-1945. He had been a very active member of the Washington Chapel for a number of years.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at 3:00 pm at Resthaven Cemetery with Peter Hoffman officiating. The family will receive friends the same day (Wednesday) from 1:30-2:30pm at Hopkins Funeral Home.

Barbara Irene Hill Nicas died peacefully on February 18, 2011. She was born February 4, 1933, daughter of Irene Strickland Hill and Charles E. Hill, Jr.

Barbara graduated from Valdosta High School and the University of Georgia where she majored in Voice and received a BFA. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Barbara lived and raised her family in Columbus, Ga. In 1985 she relocated to the Warm Springs area and worked at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation until her retirement in 1996. In 1997 she moved to Elberton, Ga. She lived for her love of music, her garden and especially her family. She had a passion for her church, St. Albans Episcopal and the Ladies Auxiliary of Elbert Memorial Hospital where she was a past President.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed. Barbara is survived by her husband Allen G. Nicas, son; George, Athens, Ga., daughter; Amanda Widener, Greenville, SC, grandchildren: Anna (Jason) Bunch, Daniel Widener, Elizabeth (Justin) Foster, and Sarah Widener; great-granddaughters Kaitlyn Bunch and Haylee Foster, all of Greenville, SC; brother, Charles E. Hill, III (Nell), Orange Beach, AL., nephews and niece.

Born on April 6, 1929 in Danielsville GA, she was the daughter of the late Enoch Pope and Katie McKinney Coile. She was a retired houseparent for the State of Georgia, Department of Mental Health. She was a member of the Flat Shoals Baptist Church, former choir member and Sunday School Teacher.

She is survived by a son, Wesley B. Sanders of Kent WA; a daughter, Judy Lawrence and her husband Larry of Hartwell; three sisters, Betty Collins of Augusta GA, Reba Hudgens of Hartwell and Mary Ray of Greenville SC; a grandson, Adam Sanders; two step-grandchildren, Travis Lawrence and Sharon Peace; two step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survives. Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emmett B. Sanders; a daughter, Melissa Renee Sanders; two brothers, Claude and Harold Coile and three sisters, Mabelle House, Delree Barton and Jessie Lee Floyd.

Mr. Waymon Boles, 81, of 220 Wayne Circle, Hartwell, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Hart Care Center.

Born on April 18, 1929 in Elbert County, GA, he was the son of the late Ernest Esco Boles and Elsie Whitman Boles. He retired from Newton Mills after 43 years where he worked as a Loom Technician, he was a member of the VFW, the Woodmen of the World, a member and former deacon of Milltown Baptist Church, and was a US Army Korean War Veteran.

He is survived by his wife: Evie Lena Vickery Boles; one daughter: Sheri Lynne Fleming of Hartwell; two brothers: Charlie Boles of Hartwell, and Preston Boles of Athens; and three grandchildren also survive. Mr. Boles was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Georgia White Boles and two sisters: Alice Cox and Rosa Lee Brown.

Addie Grace Conwell Suttles, 86, of 2006 Athens Highway, Elberton, widow of the late Rev. Dallas Norman Suttles whom she married in 1939, entered into rest Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at the Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Suttles was born in Bowman, Georgia, June 9, 1924, daughter of the late Guy and Addie Dickerson Conwell, and step-daughter of the late Maggie Conwell. She was a homemaker, a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, and a lifelong loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Susan Beggs Suttles; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Terry Sutton of Cary, North Carolina; son and daughter-in-law Virgil and Patsy Bell Suttles of Elberton, seven grandchildren; Mark Sutton, Julie Suttles, Jennifer Suttles Knopp, Paul Suttles, Kelli Suttles McConnell, Jaimie Suttles Drake, and Ben Suttles, and seven great-grandchildren Erik Sutton, Jakob Sutton, Daniel Sutton, Josiah Knopp, Isaiah Knopp, Allyssa McConnell, and Elijah McConnell.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Willie Conwell, Reba House, Nellie Owens, and Joe Conwell.

Born on November 6, 1944 in Brooklyn New York, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence John Luttrell and Mary J. Luttrell. She was a retired Medicare Clerk for the City of New York, a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, American Legion Post 109 and the AARP.

Survivors include her husband, Dominick Capobianco of the home; two sons, Larry Furno and Kerry of Holbrook NY and John Furno of New Jersey; a daughter, Sherry Kelly and Martin of Oakdale NY; two sisters, Mary Luttrell of Breezy Point NY and Cathy Stapansky of Manville RI; four grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Luttrell.

Born in Elbert County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Lucy Smith Rousey. She was a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church and a retired seamstress.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Dickerson; sister, Carolyn Johnson of Elberton; granddaughter, Jana Brinson of Brunswick, Georgia; great-granddaughters, Kyla West and Alyvia Brinson, both of Brunswick.

She is preceded in death by brothers and sister, Harvey Rousey, Joe Rousey, Henry Rousey, and Ida Ruth Coker.

Born on October 30, 1960 in Commerce GA, he was the son of Ruby Garrison Perdue Benton and the late J.L. Perdue. He was a Production Supervisor at Glen Row, a member of the Price Chapel Church of God, and a served on the Board of Directors for “We Have a Hope Christian Ministries”.

He is survived by his mother: Ruby Benton of Monroe, GA; his wife: Tina Perdue of the home; one son: Derrick Perdue and his wife Miriam of Jefferson, GA; and one brother and two sisters also survive. Mr. Perdue was preceded in death by his father.

Mrs. Moon leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Watson, Avery, and Hugh Bryant, and one sister, Jewel Chandler.

Virginia R. Fisher, 93, of Hartwell, Georgia died Monday Jan. 31, 2011. She was the daughter of William Henry Randolph and Elsie Mershon Randolph. She was married 65 years to James Glenn Fisher of Decatur and Hartwell, Georgia.

She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Hartwell where she was President of the Night WMU and a Church Circle Leader, and served on the Design and Equipment Committee, the Hospitality Committee, and Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Sanctuary Grounds (1965). She was a member of Ruth Sunday School Class, Martha Bowers Missionary Group, and the Fellowship of Christian Seniors.

Mrs. Fisher was a charter member of the Hartwell Garden Club, and was President 1957-1960. She served on the Garden Club Council and other committees. She was a member of the DAR serving as Corresponding Secretary, and also the Woman’s Club serving as Secretary.

Her surviving family are: sons James Glenn Fisher, Jr. of Banks County, Georgia; Richard R (Randy) Fisher of Hartwell, Georgia; and daughter Sharon F. Harper of Pike Road, Alabama; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be Friday, February 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hartwell First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Williams, Dr. Hugh Kirby and Rev. Carter Tucker officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Edward G. Hicks, 71, of Elberton, lost his battle with heart disease on May 2, 2010 and went home to be with his savior.

Ed was born and raised in Reynolds, GA by his parents, Henry G. and Alice Mae Ellison Hicks. He joins his father and brother Harry, in heaven. He attended Reynolds High, class of 1957, and married his grade school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Lane, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage last September. Ed graduated from the University of Georgia's School of Pharmacy and eventually settled in Elberton in 1962, serving as a registered pharmacist at The Prescription Shop, Herndon Drugs (which he owned and operated for more the 30 years), Madden's Pharmacy, Walmart and Ward's Pharmacy. Besides his mother and his wife, Ed will be missed by his son, Michael and his wife, Rebecca, of Willow Springs, NC, by his daughter, Cathy, and her husband Tracy Gurganious, of Willard, NC, and by his grandchildren, Jasmine Hicks and Jacob Gurganious.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7, at 2PM at the First Baptist Church of Elberton, where Ed served many years as an ordained deacon. The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-9PM.

Mr. Colvard was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church and a former employee of Hicks Funeral Home. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Colvard Ayers and Rozelle Colvard Johnson; and a niece, Sheraldean Ayers Crawford.

He was born and reared in Hart County. He later lived in Birmingham, Alabama, and West Palm Beach, Florida. Then he went to the University of Georgia and received a degree in Forestry in 1938. After graduation, he worked in Camden County, Georgia as a forester. There, he married Wilhelmina Stafford in 1940. In 1941, he moved to Hazlehurst, Georgia, where he lived for 54 years. In Hazlehurst, he was a forester, a Dodge and Plymouth dealer, a pulpwood dealer, a high school teacher, and he did some surveying and timber cruising. In 1995, he moved to Magnolia Estates.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilhelmina Stafford Haley, and a son, William Jackson "Jack" Haley.

Survivors include one son, Bob Haley of Orlando, Florida; three sisters, Reba Craft and Margaret Ward of Elberton, and Mary Rathbun of Ohio; one brother, Marion Holman Haley of Hartwell; a sister-in-law, Gwen Heath of Hazlehurst.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 2PM at the Elberton First Methodist Church with Reverend Wayne Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 just prior to the service at the Elberton First United Methodist Church in Elberton. Burial will be in the Palms Memorial Gardens, Hazelhurst, Ga. on Thursday April 22, 2010 under the direction of the Wainright & Parlor Funeral Home.

Born in Anderson, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Arlington and Alice Smith. Mrs Finley was a member of Elberton Christian Church. She was a homemaker and the mother of 4 children. While living in Anderson she and her husband had an antique business in the Centerville Community. They were active in their church, Evergreen Hills Baptist Church, and made many long time friends with similar interests in antique glassware and furniture. They moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed their retirement years and eventually moved to Elberton to be closer to their families.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Owens of Elberton, a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Janet Finley, of Shelby, N.C., 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Owens, and 2 sons, Dennis and Denneth.

Surviving siblings and their spouses (all of Anderson) are brothers Melvin and Jane Smith, Wilton and Sybil Smith, and sisters Mildred and Oscar Russell and Thelma King. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Smith, and sisters Thrace Haley and Montez Bryant.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 9, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be 3 PM followed by services at 4 PM. Born on March 11, 1936 in Oglethorpe County, he was the son of the late James Dorsey and Martha Grace Tiller. Mr. Tiller was a U.S. Army Veteran and the owner/operator of Tiller Trucking Company. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lucille Tiller Lee.

Adetha Mae Thomason "Dee" Rousey, 71, of 1672 Dickerson Road, Elberton, wife of Henry C. "Sonny" Rousey Sr., died on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospice House.

Born on February 27, 1939, in Gilmer, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Harley Milton and Alice J. Darnell Thomason. Dee was a member of the Goss Baptist Church. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having served as the Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star #106 and #550. Mrs. Rousey was a member of the 9th District Georgia Rural and National Letter Carriers Auxiliary, AARP, Elbert Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Elberton Red Hats Club. She was a past member of the U.S. Navy Wives Club and the Pilot Club International and a member of various PTA/Athletic Associations in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, California, Japan and Germany. Dee was a Pink Lady at Elbert Memorial Hospital and was retired from the Elbert Memorial Hospital Wellness Center. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rousey is preceded in death by her sister, Julia Ann Bridges.

Survivors include her husband, Henry C. "Sonny" Rousey Sr., of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon L. and Gregg Walker, of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Henry C. "Chip" and Tracey Colquitt Rousey Jr., of Elberton; brothers, James M. and Harley L. Thomason; and grandchildren, Ashley, Cara and Wesley Rousey and Tara and Jessi Walker. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Reverend Connie Ivester officiating. At Dee's request, her body was cremated. Mr. Higginbotham was involved in the trucking and granite industries and a member of the Eliam United Methodist Church. Stanley was a WWII Veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre and a 65 year member of the Elberton Philomathea Masonic Lodge # 25. He was also a lifelong member of the Yaarab Shriners. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Martha Jacks “Jackie” Higginbotham, who passed away on December 1, 2009; and brothers, E.G. Higginbotham, Jr., and Marshall Higginbotham.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Gwen and Carroll Childs and Libby Higginbotham Love, all of Elberton; sons and daughter-in-law, S. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., of Littleton, CO., and Keith and Mandy Higginbotham, of Athens; grandchildren, Kevin Childs, Katie Childs Brown, Janson Teasley, Cory Grimes, and Lyle Higginbotham; great-grandchildren, Allie Brown and Emma Hernandez; and brother, Joe Higginbotham. Mary Nesa Mills, 61, of 141 Tusten St., Elberton, died Friday January 8, 2010 at the Trinty Hospital in Augusta GA.

Born in Elbert County, Ga., she was a daughter of Edith DePalma Mills and the late Jim Tom Mills. She was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Edith DePalma Mills, of Elberton. Sister and brother-in-law; Cindy and Kim Lloyd, of Ruston, La. Nephew and niece, Chris and Sarah Lloyd, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Katie Lloyd, of Alburn Al.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday January 11, at the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. J. Wesley Privett, and Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM before services at Berry Funeral Home. The family is at the home, 141 Tusten St.

Pallbearers will be; Stanley Mills, Galen Mills, Tony Mills Jr., Mike Mills, Steele Mills, Josh Mills, Austin Mills, and Lewis Bailey.

Mr. James ‘Lamar’ Lindsey, age 65, of Elberton, passed away on Tuesday, January 05, 2010 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born on March 17, 1944 in Wilkes County, he was a son of the late Louie Lamar and Ruby Wheatly Lindsey. He was retired from the textile industry. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lindsey is preceded in death by his son, Shannon Lamar Lindsey.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Sandra Whidby Lindsey; step-daughter, Michelle Adams, both of Elberton; step-son and daughter-in-law, Zeke and Christy Adams; grandchildren, Brittany and Michael Owens, and Eli Adams, all of Anderson; and sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Charles Smith of Tignall.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Lindsey will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2009 at 3PM in the Fishing Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Al Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM prior to the service at Hicks Funeral Home. Flowers are optional, and memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Charlie Wilder

Charlie Lester Wilder, age 61, of Elberton, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2010 at Landmark Hospital, Athens.

Born on October 13, 1948 in Elbert County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mattie Belle Brackett Wilder. Mr. Wilder was a truck driver for the granite industry and served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jones Wilder.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy and Raymond Harrell, and Charlene Dutton; son, Charles Wilder; and six grandchildren. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Wilder will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2009 at 2PM in the Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Reverend DeWayne Haley officiating. Entombment will follow in the Forest Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will be at the home of Dorothy and Raymond Harrell, 707 Church Street, Royston, and will receive friends from 6-8PM Monday evening at Hicks Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted.

TJ Johnson

Mr. Terry Mark “TJ” Johnson, 53, of 2363 Washington Hwy, Elberton GA, passed away on Friday, January 01, 2010 at his home.

Born in Anderson Co. SC, he was the son of Libby Hill Johnson and the late Bennie Max Johnson. TJ was a former member of the Elbert County EMS and Hart Co. EMS and served as a first responder for both. He was former Vice-President of Whitlow Electric Co, former employee of Star Granite and was a member of the Elberton First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Libby Hill Johnson of Hartwell; wife, Angela Smith Johnson of the home; a daughter, Ande Rae Johnson of the home; a son, Benne Max Johnson of the home; a sister, Joy Shaw of Hartwell and two brothers, Tony Johnson of Hartwell and Barney Johnson of Franklin Springs also survive.

A service celebrating TJ’s life will be held on Saturday, January 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elberton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Smith and Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. The following person have been asked to be honorary pallbearers: The Board of Directors of the TJ & Friends Foundation, Darren Scarborough, Kyle Scarborough, Keith Scarborough, Josh Fowler, Jimmy Gunter, Mark Adams, Ricky Johnson, Steve Higginbotham, Mike Webb, Chuck Almond, Blake Thompson, Randy Lane, Galen Mills, Frankie Teasley, Dr. Wiggans, Dr. Hallie, Terri Glaude, Nancy Seymour, Terri Seymour, Pam Gunner and Lee Pulliam.

George Ward

George William Ward, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at his residence.

He was the husband of Anne Greenway Ward for 64 years and the father of Donna Ward (Jim) Stallings of White Plains, Georgia and Lynne Ward (Walt) Seeger of Waynesboro, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 2PM at the Elberton First Baptist Church with Reverend Gary Purvis and Reverend Ken Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. Visitation will from 6-8PM Friday, January 1, 2009 at Hicks Funeral Home.

He was the son of the late Ike Swift Ward and Hettie Teasley Ward of the Rock Branch Community. He is preceded in death by an infant son, two sisters, and three brothers.

Ward retired as Chief of Police after a 41 year career with the Elberton Police Department. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Washington, DC; Special Police Management and Traffic Institute, Northwestern University; Law Enforcement and Peace Officers Training Program, University of Georgia.
Mr. Ward was appointed to the Georgia Crime Information Council as a representative of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police of Governors Carter, Busby, and Miller, serving from 1973 to 1993. He served on the board of directors of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy and the Northeast Georgia Criminal Justice Advisory Council.

Ward was the last remaining charter member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs Police. He served as President and in many other capacities and was awarded the “Outstanding Chief” award at the association’s annual conference in 1976. Upon his retirement, Chief Ward obtained the distinction of being the longest tenured Police Chief in the United States. He was proud of his work in improving training for small town police departments and increasing training opportunities for Chiefs throughout the state.

He was recently honored for his “commitment and dedication to the City of Elberton” by the naming of the newly renovated Police Department of him.
Mr. Ward was a longtime member and deacon of the Elberton First Baptist Church and was a member and former President of the Elberton Kiwanis Club. He was presented Kiwanis’ Highest, the George F. Hixon Fellowship Award on the 80th anniversary of the club.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by grandchildren, Melissa Donna Argo, George Martin Neal, Claudia Anne Seeger, and Walter Rhodes (Tina) Seeger, Jr., and Joshua James (April) Stallings; great grandchildren, William Baxter Argo, Bryce Anne Argo, Dustin Andrew Neal, Mason James Stallings, and Rebecca Claire Seeger; and sister-in-law, Agnes Ward. Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Pallbearers will include Jack Fricks, Charles Hill, John Hubbard, Rod McCarty, Marion McMullan, Billy Webb, Dr. Jack Wheeler, and Dan White.

Honorary pallbearers will include the Elberton First Baptist Church Victory Sunday School Class members, and past and present officers and staff of the Elberton Police Department.
